Refinements

Refinements are labels that you apply to web sites in your search engine index to help your users more easily find the information they are looking for. When a user clicks a refinement label, sites that you have annotated with the label are either searched exclusively or given priority in the results—you choose.

For example, say you've created a search engine about primates. Some of the sites you've added are specifically about chimps, and some are about gorillas. You can use labels to categorize the content on your site so that users can filter search results. For example, say your Monkeys search engine includes content about gorillas and chimps. With labels, you can:

  • Annotate search results (for example, by labeling a result "Chimps" or "Gorillas"). Other useful labels might include "blog" and "official website".
  • Enable users to prioritize or filter search results according to label.

To enable refinements in your search engine, you'll first need to create a set of labels, and then apply those labels to sites you've included in your search engine.

Create a label:

  1. On the Control Panel, on the left-hand menu, click Refinements.
  2. Click Add Refinement.
  3. In the Refinement name box, type a label. (Tips for creating useful labels.)
  4. Specify any other options you want, and click Save.
  5. Repeat for every label you want to add.
  6. Under Displayed refinements, select the number of refinements you want displayed on search results pages.
  7. Click Save changes.

 Apply labels to your site

There are two ways to apply the labels you've created to your site. You can apply them through the control panel or directly through the search UI:

Apply labels to your site with the control panel:

  1. From the control panel, select the search engine you want to edit.
  2. If you aren't already on the Basics tab, click Setup from the left menu and then click Basics.
  3. Under Sites to search, check one or more sites you want to apply the same label to.
  4. Click Label and check one or more labels to add.

Apply labels to your site from the search UI:

  1. From the control panel, select the search engine you want to edit.
  2. If you aren't already on the Basics tab, click Setup from the left menu and then click Basics.
  3. Click Label sites by search.
  4. In the search page that opens, search for a query you want to add labels to.
  5. Under a result you want to label, click Add label.
  6. Select whether you want to label the particular page, the whole site the page is on, or anything with a specific part of the page prefix.
  7. Check which labels you want to apply and click Save.
