Enhance your organization's website even more with Google Site Search.

Change the look and feel of your search engine

You can customize the look and feel of both your search box and results to match your site's layout and design. You have the options to select a layout, choose a theme or make your own, and disable or enable thumbnails in search results.

Anytime you change the layout of your search engine, you must update your code snippet for your changes to appear. Click Save and Get Code, then copy the code and paste it into your site, replacing the existing code snippet.

Choose a layout for your search engine:

  1. From the control panel, select the search engine you want to edit.
  2. Click Look and feel from the menu on the left and then click the Layout tab.
  3. Select the layout you want to use for your search engine. You can choose for your results to overlay over the page, open on a separate page, open in a different column, and more.
Note If you select a layout that separates the search box and results, you'll get two snippets of code: one for the box and one for the results. Make sure you put each where you want that element to go.
  4. Click Save & Get Code and insert the new code into your site.

To use a premade theme for your search engine:

  1. From the control panel, select the search engine you want to edit.
  2. Click Look and feel from the menu on the left and then click the Themes tab.
  3. Select the theme you want to use. You can preview them in the box on the right.
  4. Click Save & Get Code and insert the new code into your site.

Customize your own theme for your search engine

If none of the premade themes suit your site, you can customize each component of your search engine manually.

  1. Click Look and feel from the left menu in Control Panel, and open the Customize tab.
  2. Select the element you want to customze from the box on the left.
  3. Choose the font, border color, and background color for that element.
  4. When you're ready, click Save & Get Code and insert the new code into your site.

Enable or disable thumbnails in results

  1. Click Look and feel from the left menu in Control Panel, and open the Thumbnails tab.
  2. Click on the button to turn thumbnails On or Off
