Use the old version of Contacts

You can save names, email addresses, phone numbers and more in the old Google Contacts.

Switch to the old Google Contacts

  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the bottom left, click Go to the old version.

Tip: To switch back to the new version, go to the bottom left and click Try Contacts preview.

Add, edit or delete contacts

Note: If these steps don't work for you, you're probably using the newer version of Contacts. Add, edit or delete contacts in the new Contacts.

Add a contact
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. In the top left, click New Contact.
  3. Add contact information.
Edit a contact
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. Click the contact's name.
  3. Hover your mouse over the contact info, then type in the box that appears.
Delete a contact
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. Tick the box next to the contact's name.
  3. At the top, click More and then Delete Contact.
Delete automatically saved 'Other contacts'
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. In the bottom left, click Other contacts.
  3. Tick all the contacts that you want to delete.
  4. At the top, click More and then Delete contacts.

Group and sort contacts

Note: If these steps don't work for you, you're probably using the newer version of Contacts. Go to group contacts in the new Contacts.

Create a contact group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, click New group.
  3. Type in a new group name.
  4. Click OK.
Add a contact to a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. Tick the box next to the contact's name.
  3. At the top, click Group Group.
  4. Tick the groups that you want to add your contact to.
Remove a contact from a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, under My Contacts, click on a group.
  3. Tick the box next to the name of the contact that you want to remove.
  4. At the top, click Group Group.
  5. A ticked box will appear next to any group that the contact is in. To remove a contact from a group, untick the group.
Rename a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, under My Contacts, click on a group.
  3. At the top, click More and then Rename group.
  4. Type in a new group name.
  5. Click OK.
Delete a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, under My Contacts, click on a group.
  3. At the top, click More and then Delete group.
  4. Click OK.
Sort a group alphabetically
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, under My Contacts, click on a group.
  3. At the top, click More.
  4. Tick First Name or Surname.

Merge contacts

Note: If these steps don't work for you, you're probably using the newer version of Contacts. Go to merge contacts in new Contacts.

  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. At the top, click More.
  3. Click Find and merge duplicates...
  4. Click Merge.

Turn on keyboard shortcuts

  1. Go to the old version of Google Contacts.
  2. In the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  3. Next to 'Keyboard shortcuts', select Keyboard shortcuts on.
  4. Click OK.

Note: Keyboard shortcuts work differently on PCs and Macs. On a PC, use Ctrl instead of .
