Bugsnag cloud application

You must be signed in as a super administrator for this task.

With Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), your users can sign in to enterprise cloud applications with their Google Cloud credentials.

Set up SSO via SAML for Bugsnag

Before configuring SSO, Bugsnag provides a unique ID for your organization. For example, “yorg-1” in https://app.bugsnag.com/yorg-1/sandbox, which is provided to you when you register an account at Bugsnag. If you forget the unique ID, go to this ID request page, and provide your registered email address to get it by email.

Step 1: Set up Google as a SAML identity provider (IdP)
  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using an account with super administrator privileges (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenSAML apps.
  3. Click the plus (+) icon at bottom right. 
  4. Locate and click Bugsnag in the application list.
  5. On the Google IDP Information page, download the IDP metadata.
  6. Click Next.

    The Basic information window shows the Application name and Description seen by users.

  7. Click Next.
  8. On the Service Provider Details page, edit the ACS URL, replacing {uniqueid-provided-by-sp} with the unique ID specific to your organization provided by Bugsnag. 
  9. Click Next.
  10. On the Attribute Mapping page, set Select category and Select user field values as follows for the listed attributes:

User.LastName Basic Information Last Name
  1. Click Finish.
Step 2: Host the Google IDP metadata to a public file server

On a publicly accessible file server, host the Google IDP metadata file downloaded in step 1. The file must be served directly, not via any redirects. The file also needs to be permanently available at a specific URL. It is requested by Bugsnag each time a user signs in.

Step 3: Set up Bugsnag as a SAML 2.0 service provider (SP)
  1. Open a new incognito browser window.
  2. Sign in to the Bugsnag homepage with your organization’s Bugsnag administrator account.
  3. On the Bugsnag home page, click your user-profile icon and select Settings.
  4. Click Organization.
  5. Click Single Sign-on under Authentication.
  6. In the Login URL from your SSO provider field, enter the URL of the Google IDP metadata, hosted on the file server (step 2).
  7. Leave the option to auto-provision new users enabled.
  8. Click Enable SSO
  9. (Optional) If user auto-provisioning is not enabled in Bugsnag, create users:
    • Click Settings to return to the Settings page.
    • Click Collaborators.
    • Click Add Collaborators.
    • Enter your Google user email address and click Send Invites.
    • Open the Google user mailbox and accept the Bugsnag invitation.
Step 4: Enable the Bugsnag app
  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenSAML apps.
  3. Select Bugsnag.
  4. Click User access.
  5. To turn on or off a service for everyone in your organization, click On for everyone or Off for everyone, and then click Save.

  6. To turn on or off a service only for users in an organizational unit:

    1. At the left, select the organizational unit.
    2. Select On or Off.
    3. To keep the service turned on or off even when the service is turned on or off for the parent organizational unit, click Override.
    4. If the organization's status is already Overridden, choose an option:
      • Inherit—Reverts to the same setting as its parent.
      • Save—Saves your new setting (even if the parent setting changes).

  7. (Optional) Turn on the service for a group of users.

  8. Ensure that your Bugsnag user account email IDs match those in your Google domain.
Step 5: Verify that the SSO is working

Bugsnag supports both Identity Provider (IdP) initiated and Service Provider (SP) initiated SSO. Follow these steps to verify SSO in either mode:


  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Appsand thenSAML apps.
  3. Select Bugsnag.
  4. At the top left, click Test SAML login

    Bugsnag should open in a separate tab. If it doesn’t, use the information in the resulting SAML error messages to update your IdP and SP settings as needed, then retest SAML login.


  1. Close all browser windows.
  2. Open the Bugsnag homepage and click Sign in.
  3. Click Sign in with your identity provider.
  4. Enter your organization’s Bugsnag provided unique ID, and click Sign in using your identity provider. You should be redirected to the Google sign-in page.
  5. Enter your username and password.

After your credentials are authenticated, you are redirected back to Bugsnag.
