Renew with Continuing Education

Renewing via continuing education in Google Skills offers an alternative to traditional proctored assessments for select Google Cloud certifications. Instead of testing, candidates can extend their certification’s validity by completing designated learning during the final year of their active cycle.

Eligible Certifications:

  • Cloud Digital Leader (CDL),
  • Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE),
  • Professional Cloud Architect (PCA),
  • Professional Data Engineer (PDE)

Eligibility Window:

The eligibility window to complete the required learning opens 1-year before your certification becomes inactive.

  • Learning activities must be completed after the 1-year window opens. For example: if your certification's inactive date is 2027-12-31, the learning activities must have a completion date on or after 2026-12-31.
  • Learning activities completed before the 1-year window opens cannot be retaken or applied to your renewal. You will need to choose different activities from the available options.

Extension Period:

Completing the required activities adds 1 year of validity to your current inactive date. For example: if your certification's inactive date is 2027-12-30, completing the designated activities will extend the certification's validity until 2028-12-30.

Guide to Continuing Education Renewal:

1. Review and update your CM Connect profile as needed

  • Primary Email: log in and go to My Information
  • Professional Email: log in and go to Profile > Professional Affiliations, and update the Work/Professional email.

2. Sign in or create a Google Skills (or Google Skills for Partners) account

  • Sign in: If you already have an account, use the primary or professional email from CM Connect.

  • Update your email: If it does not match the primary or professional email from CM Connect.

  • Create an account: If you don't already have one, create it using the primary or professional email from CM Connect.

3. Consent to data sharing to ensure your coursework counts toward your renewal.

  • Click on the "Certifications" tile on your dashboard.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to grant data sharing permissions between Google Skills and CM Connect.

4. Complete the Learning Activities

  • After Logging in and authorizing data sharing, click on the Certifications tile on your dashboard.

  • The certifications that are eligible for continuing education renewal will display a "Renew" button next to them.
  • If the “Renew” button is not visible, it means you are outside the renewal window or not eligible for Continuing Education Renewal.
  • Click the "Renew" button to open the designated continuing education learning path and begin your required courses and skill badges.

Renew with an Exam

If your certification is ineligible for continuing education - or if you simply prefer traditional testing or want to extend your certification by more than one year - you can renew by taking an exam.

Depending on your specific certification, you may choose between a Shorter Renewal Exam or the Standard Certification Exam. If a shorter renewal exam is available and you are eligible, it will automatically appear as a scheduling option. Please refer to each exam page for detailed information, including the exam guide, cost, exam languages offered, and renewal eligibility.

Renewal FAQs:

Will I be notified when I need to renew my certification?

Yes. Depending on the certification, you will receive renewal notifications 180/90 days prior to your certification expiration date and every 30 days thereafter until the certification is renewed or expired. Reminder emails will be sent to the primary email address in your CM Connect profile.

Your certification can be renewed up to 30 days after your certification's inactive date.

Am I allowed to renew my certification before the start of the renewal eligibility period?

No. You may not attempt the same exam while currently certified unless you are within the renewal eligibility period. If you violate these terms, your exam result will be rejected, you forfeit any exam fees paid, any current certification(s) may be revoked, and you could be suspended from the Google Cloud Certification Program.

Why can’t I see the renewal exams in the catalog?

Renewal exams are only displayed and available to certified individuals who are within their renewal eligibility period.

How do I find my 50% off renewal discount code?

You will receive a 50% off renewal discount code when you initially certify. You can find your renewal discount code by logging into your CM Connect profile.

How much does it cost to renew my certification?

The renewal cost varies by exam. Please see the exam web pages.

What happens if I fail my certification renewal attempt?

If you are within your renewal eligibility period, you can attempt to renew again. The waiting period between attempts varies by exam. More information on the retake policy can be found here.

Please note: Once you choose your renewal path (i.e. choose the shorter renewal exam or standard exam) for the Professional Data Engineer, Associate Cloud Engineer and the Cloud Digital Leader certifications, you cannot switch after your first renewal attempt. You can switch your renewal path for the Professional Cloud Architect certification. If you attempt the shorter renewal exam, a score report is not provided.

I’m scheduled for the standard exam, but I want to take the new renewal exam instead. How do I switch?

You must cancel your standard exam registration first. Then, you can register for the renewal exam. Please note the rescheduling and cancellation policy:

  • A late rescheduling or cancellation fee is applied if you update your registration less than 24 hours before your scheduled exam start time.

If you used a voucher code for payment, you may use the voucher code again if the initial registration is cancelled prior to the periods noted above.

I did not receive the notification that my certification expired. What happens now?

Google Cloud uses the primary email address listed in your CM Connect profile for all Google Cloud Certification communications. Please ensure that your email address is correct to receive notifications.

My certification has expired. What happens now?

To continue receiving the certification benefits, you will need to take the exam to get certified again. Your options will depend on your certification status.

  • If you are less than 30 days past your certification's inactive date, you can renew and retain your Series ID. Please refer to the exam page for renewal details.
  • If you are more than 30 days past your certification's inactive date, your certification is no longer valid. You must take the standard exam and pay the full list price of the standard exam. However, once you recertify, you can have your original Series ID back!

Can I renew my certification by passing a beta exam?

Yes, you may participate in a beta exam regardless of your certification status. If you are already certified, passing a beta exam counts towards your certification renewal. You are only allowed one attempt on the beta exam. If you don't pass the beta exam, you can try again after the final version of the exam opens to the general public. Failing a beta exam does not count toward the total allowable attempts on the final exam (4 attempts for Professional and Associate exams, 10 attempts for Foundational exams). More information about beta exams can be found here.
