Has anyone with chromecast gen 3 experienced audio stutter and skipping? 5 Recommended Answers 43 Replies 74 Upvotes

Since recently  (new firmware with rounded corners) I have noticed that youtube videos 1080p @ 60fps, have stuttering and skipping audio.
Gen 3 chromecast is supposed to handle that format but obviously isn't up to it.  Unfortunately it will always default to 1080p 60fps if its available. This makes chromecast unusable for most of the newer content. I would be happy to watch youtube content in 720p without audio skipping but there is no way to select quality in youtube app. I tried to cap the bandwidth on my router (so that it would stay at 720p) and it only works if I cap it to 2Mbit/s, but that defeats the purpose (makes it slower that gen2).
Oh and I tried absolutely everything (changing the TV, all the chromecast options, 5ghz router, cooling down the chromecast, absolutely everything).
So has anyone else noticed this? Is there any  possible solution?

Hello, thanks for taking the time to post your issue.

Does your phone, TV or router have a task killer app, standby, firewall, antivirus, sleep mode, power saver, a parental control, tv HDMI-CEC settings, wifi network extender, or electromagnetic devices (stereo receiver, DECT cordless phone, microwave, baby monitor, refrigerator, LCD monitor, etc) causing interference?  A wifi repeater may cause a micro second delay.

If you have DECT or baby monitor, or other bluetooth devices, make sure their batteries are fresh and check their user manuals about changing channels. Speaking of channels, if you have an Android device, install the Google Play app, Wifi Analyzer and run it. Your wifi router may be on a congested channel. Try channel 1, 6 or 11. Not Auto setting.  Please keep in mind that resetting or making changes to your router settings may have unintended consequences. If you have questions or concerns, please consult your router manufacturer or Internet Service Provider before making any changes.

Thank you for replying and your effort. Pretty much tried all the above and more. Including using different usb cable and power brick. Put a heat sink on chromecast even. Rebooting hard reseting. No use. We really need an option to choose streaming quality on chromecast from youtube. Im happy to choose 720p just to get smooth playback. I relly dont need 60 fps video. It worked great out of the box.  But with this new OTA firmware i got audio stutter and rounded corners on my tv. This is not what I bought 8 months ago.

Nope. You can only enable or disable preview firmware program, but that won't force an update, you'll only get an update once the next one is rolled out to you. Factory reset won't do it either, the installed firmware is retained.

Well, nice to see that it's a recognized firmware bug.
One of the community specialists there has stated that  they will fix the rounded corners problem over the next update. Hopefully they will fix the 1080p60fps audio stutter problem also.

For the sake of keeping this relevant, issue is here as well. Super annoying when trying to listen to music.
Firmware version 1.49.230269.

I've ruled out other causes like everyone else.

I hope this gets fixed soon, just got a Chromecast V3 (new one isn't out yet here) and I'm starting to regret my purchase

I am glad I found this issue, came here from the rounded corner thread which I found in some news site.
This is extremely annoying and makes the Chromecast unusable for certain content.
It's a shame for Google QA, and a shame that Google does not act quickly.

I hope the rounded corner firmware fix will also fix this. I don't care about the corners, but the skipping is really, really bad.

I am also having this issue. Very frustrating as I never encountered it on my previous Chromecast. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Same as you here and the Bluetooth device is a Fosi Audio amp 6 inches from the chromecast. Stuttering only on youtube. So Google needs to get their s*** straight. Hell they own both of them why can't they make them work? I have gigabit internet and have no issues with any other device. I'll probably get modded on this one but whatever. Maybe somebody will see it.

I had a hunch this was going on, but the stats were not clear on that, Thanks for clarifying. I figured the fact that it seemed to be doing this and doesn't have a lot of power might have had something to do with the stuttering.

> Check your tv picture settings that the picture mode is set to "full size" or similarly named instead of one that slightly crops the picture (intended for hiding overscan in tv channels). Cropping likely is enough to hude the rounded corners.

Thank you!
