Has anyone with chromecast gen 3 experienced audio stutter and skipping? 5 Recommended Answers 36 Replies 64 Upvotes

Since recently  (new firmware with rounded corners) I have noticed that youtube videos 1080p @ 60fps, have stuttering and skipping audio.
Gen 3 chromecast is supposed to handle that format but obviously isn't up to it.  Unfortunately it will always default to 1080p 60fps if its available. This makes chromecast unusable for most of the newer content. I would be happy to watch youtube content in 720p without audio skipping but there is no way to select quality in youtube app. I tried to cap the bandwidth on my router (so that it would stay at 720p) and it only works if I cap it to 2Mbit/s, but that defeats the purpose (makes it slower that gen2).
Oh and I tried absolutely everything (changing the TV, all the chromecast options, 5ghz router, cooling down the chromecast, absolutely everything).
So has anyone else noticed this? Is there any  possible solution?

Hello, thanks for taking the time to post your issue.

Does your phone, TV or router have a task killer app, standby, firewall, antivirus, sleep mode, power saver, a parental control, tv HDMI-CEC settings, wifi network extender, or electromagnetic devices (stereo receiver, DECT cordless phone, microwave, baby monitor, refrigerator, LCD monitor, etc) causing interference?  A wifi repeater may cause a micro second delay.

If you have DECT or baby monitor, or other bluetooth devices, make sure their batteries are fresh and check their user manuals about changing channels. Speaking of channels, if you have an Android device, install the Google Play app, Wifi Analyzer and run it. Your wifi router may be on a congested channel. Try channel 1, 6 or 11. Not Auto setting.  Please keep in mind that resetting or making changes to your router settings may have unintended consequences. If you have questions or concerns, please consult your router manufacturer or Internet Service Provider before making any changes.

Thank you for replying and your effort. Pretty much tried all the above and more. Including using different usb cable and power brick. Put a heat sink on chromecast even. Rebooting hard reseting. No use. We really need an option to choose streaming quality on chromecast from youtube. Im happy to choose 720p just to get smooth playback. I relly dont need 60 fps video. It worked great out of the box.  But with this new OTA firmware i got audio stutter and rounded corners on my tv. This is not what I bought 8 months ago.

Nope. You can only enable or disable preview firmware program, but that won't force an update, you'll only get an update once the next one is rolled out to you. Factory reset won't do it either, the installed firmware is retained.

Well, nice to see that it's a recognized firmware bug.
One of the community specialists there has stated that  they will fix the rounded corners problem over the next update. Hopefully they will fix the 1080p60fps audio stutter problem also.

For the sake of keeping this relevant, issue is here as well. Super annoying when trying to listen to music.
Firmware version 1.49.230269.

I've ruled out other causes like everyone else.

I hope this gets fixed soon, just got a Chromecast V3 (new one isn't out yet here) and I'm starting to regret my purchase

I am glad I found this issue, came here from the rounded corner thread which I found in some news site.
This is extremely annoying and makes the Chromecast unusable for certain content.
It's a shame for Google QA, and a shame that Google does not act quickly.

I hope the rounded corner firmware fix will also fix this. I don't care about the corners, but the skipping is really, really bad.

Same as you here and the Bluetooth device is a Fosi Audio amp 6 inches from the chromecast. Stuttering only on youtube. So Google needs to get their s*** straight. Hell they own both of them why can't they make them work? I have gigabit internet and have no issues with any other device. I'll probably get modded on this one but whatever. Maybe somebody will see it.

Same problem with my gen 3 Chromecast. It's really sad because they advertise it with being capable of doing 1080P60 in their product description which does seem like a lie. Read about a lot of people having the same issue on Reddit etc.

My network is up to snuff because all other devices can handle 4K60 without a problem on the same 5G network.

Same problem. Had the same issue since I bought the chromecast a month ago. Got it replaced, same problem. Certain videos are simply unwatchable. It's the only app with this problem.

Hi there! I recently got a third gen Chromecast and I'm facing the same issue, audio stutters on some YouTube videos, Chromecast placed next to the wifi, only the Chromecast and my cellphone were connected to the network, no baby monitors, bluetooth devices, microwave ovens, etc, etc, etc, were around, Chromecast powered using it's brick instead of the TV USB port. I'm already regretting this purchase.

Even more troubling is the audio bug in gen 3 on 60fps 1080p videos. We need to keep the comunity aware of these problems. Please visit this link and upwote this issue and maybe someone will take notice.

I have not seen rounded corners, however, at 1080p@60fps my chromecast gen 3 is stuttering.

The wifi in the room is fast enough to stream 1080p at 60 fps, this is the resolution and speed I use for the steam link (a device game streaming over wifi) that's right next to the chromecast on the same tv.
And the internet? 500mbps up/down optic fibre, full duplex.

I've taken of the plastic shroud and put on 2 giant (big) heat sinks on both sides of the chromecast.
I've tried updating my phone, youtube app and alternate youtube apps
I've tried resetting the router (archer c9 v2)

Nothing helps, it just stutters. The audio even more than the video.

Looking trough the 'stats for nerds' info, I noticed that the chromecast is taking in 1080p video, sampling it down to 720p, then sampling it back up to 1080p to match my tv??? That is really weird.

Check your tv picture settings that the picture mode is set to "full size" or similarly named instead of one that slightly crops the picture (intended for hiding overscan in tv channels). Cropping likely is enough to hude the rounded corners.

If that is not the case then post your firmware version number because it would be interesting. A fix for the rounded corners was promised months ago.

This is normal whenever CC can't keep up. It is not "downsampling" it on-the-fly (the device wouldn't even have enough power to do that), it is simply dropping to a lower quality level. Every video is available in different resolutions and formats on Youtube's servers and stats for nerds displays which one is being played currently.

Please Google, you need to do something, it is almost 4-5months, and Twitchtv 1080p60fps all streams have sound stuttering and jittering. 936p60fps and 720p60fps streams do not have this sound stuttering issue (they all using the SAME bitrate on OBS). Same for youtube 1080p60fps videos. And also, if i try to cast a 1080p60fps video through VLC player, (especially the videos downloaded from twitch, clips) it also do the same sound stuttering and way worse. Please why are you guys ignoring this issue. You advertised this as 1080p 60fps device. Please keep inmind, in some regions this device is costs a lot for those region's peoples income. For me video is 99% smooth but sound is terrible, so stuttery at 1080p60fps. Both wireless and with ethernet it is still doing the same, i tested with an app from google play store (it speedtest inside chromecast) and i always got above 60mbit connection speeds (i have 100mbit) So i checked all topics about this since 4 5 days and it is the firmware.

Please stop ignoring this issue.  I trusted 1080p 60fps capability of the device as advertised, now can't even enjoy or use it.

Thanks.

edit: it is crazy. it is only at 1080p60 . Not on 1080p50, not on 936p60, not on 720p60. It is just 1080p60fps on anything i played. (and no, 50hz option at google home is not solving the issue) Twitch, youtube, VLC>chromecast. Please give us at least old working firmware, it is crazy that you guys are still ignoring this issue!

edit2: If i use Web Video Caster and choose the same twitchtv channel and 1080p60fps, i cast to Chromecast device, it is doing the same Sound Stuttering, exactly the same .

But if i choose DLNA instead of Chromecast device on Web Video Caster app, there is not a single sound stuttering happening at 1080p60fps twitch stream...

Please more than 4-5 months, you guys need to do something about this. Thanks.

I recently got a second TV and bought a new chromecast (gen 3) for it. My old tv uses the gen 2 and I only notice this happening on the gen 3 I just bought. Tried swapping them with different TVs and resetting the new chromecast to no avail. I am a YouTube premium member with the Google WiFi. Other casting apps work no problem, and it only seems to happen with HD videos. WTF google fix this crap.

@Alex Vice
Check what firmware the 2nd gen has. Probably an older one. In this case fortunately.

This issue ONLY happens on 1080p60 videos and when the said quality is actually being played, not just on any HD video. Use the stats for nerds feature of Youtube app to see what is actually being played.

I also explained the situation to Twitch.tv Support (Mar 2, 2021). This problem also exists for twitchtv 1080p60 streams, not only youtube. Hopefully they will communicate with Google and sort this issue out. I mean 8 months is too long to not give us at least the working old firmware.

Twitchtv :

1080p60 8000 bitrate > Stutters
720p60   8000 bitrate > No Stuttering
932p60   9000 bitrate > No Stuttering (bitrate peaking to 10k)
1080p50 9000 bitrate > No Stuttering
1080p48 8000 bitrate > No Stuttering

This makes no sense! How come 9000-10000bitrate Not Stuttering, but only 1080p60 8000 audio stutters?

Download random Twitchtv 1080p60 clips and stream it with VLC to Chromecast = mostly Stuttering
edit2: here is downloaded clip video that stutters the most, sound cuts so much   https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DTfa_-ug--K-3QuMAIqitabSCDj2w_qt/view?usp=sharing

On any live stream (edit: 1080p60) > still image with sound = Way more stuttering, When screen is moving it is getting less stuttering.

I used https://r-1.ch/analyzer/ to get twitch channel statistics, bitrate, fps etc

Anyways. Peace.

edit3: And yes, youtube 1080p60 videos > same stuttering issue. 720p60 no stuttering. Sometimes video plays normal, but only audio stutter.

I got a new Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K and i can see i am getting 94-95mbit with ethernet, 55-60+ with wifi5.0, 35-37 with wifi2.4, and there is not a single issue on it with chromecast or twitch app. Same for youtube.
I also bought ethernet dongle for Gen3 and my speeds tests inside chrome was also Good enough for 1080p60 and more. ( i used https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speed.chromecast&hl=en_US to speedtests from inside chromecast)
I bought 1m hdmi extender cable to test the chromecast gen3 away from TV, and still the same. I put folio behind tv, between chromecast and tv still the same. I added Passive Coolers + FAN to test it as last chance, still the same. Have a great day you all.
