Chromecast streaming Netflix - No surround sound option 2 Recommended Answers 45 Replies 350 Upvotes

With my current setup, I am successfully able to stream Dolby Digital through Chromecast using Google Play Movies. This proves that the hardware and connected configuration works with Dolby Digital surround.
With all that same setup, I am unable to stream Netflix in anything but stereo.
I have two separate Chromecasts (one is a v2 and one is a v3) and both have the same issue.
- I have tried resetting chromecasts to factory defaults and setting them back up again.
- I have tried streaming Netflix from two separate phones.
- I even have tried two separate Netflix accounts.
- I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Netflix android app.
- I have tried streaming Netflix from PC.
There is never an option for anything but stereo audio from Netflix through Chromecast. I even have a SmartTV with Netflix, and when I stream Netflix on it instead of the Chromecast, I am able to get Dolby Digital Surround Sound with the same Netflix video. I am also able to see Dolby Digital within the audio settings on Netflix when streaming on the PC (not through chromecast) using the windows 10 app.
I have a approx 117Mbps down cable connection. Netflix account is set to stream in high quality.
So in summary, my setup and Chromecast is working with Dolby Digital Surround in Google Play Movies, but does not allow anything but Stereo when streaming from Netflix. It's not a hardware or connection issue, It's not a specific account, specific app, just Netflix -> chromecast has no ability for surround sound, just stereo audio.

Hi All,
I've been having the same issue and have been looking into it and have carried out a couple of tests.
The Google Chromecast (V3 at least) has no problem streaming Dolby 5.1.
I have proved this by using PLEX with a Dolby sample file and it passes through the CC and my TV optical cable to my surround amp with no issues.
I have also proved the system works using the Google Movies app streaming to the Chromecast, same result, Dolby 5.1.
After speaking to Netflix & Amazon Prime about their mobile apps they both report the following: -
Netflix suggest this is a technical problem (I believe this isn't' the case and the app doesn't support 5.1)
Amazon report the app on both IOS and Android doesn't support 5.1.
Netflix TV based apps do support 5.1 and I assume support is available for Prime TV apps but I'm unable to test this as I don't have a TV which supports the Prime Video app at this time.
So, in conclusion, the Chromecast does support 5.1 the issue resides with both Netflix and Prime Video mobile apps.

The only constant in my scenario is chromecast. Netflix app on the smart TV was able to stream with Dolby digital and the windows 10 app was able to stream with Dolby digital. I doubt the problem is a Netflix app on my phone, my friend's phone, the Netflix web app on pc through Chrome, testing with two different accounts. No, the only constant that's not working is Netflix over chromecast. Not a single app.

It's most likely because the TV can't passthrough Dolby Digital +, a staple of Netflix. The CC refuses to send a Dolby Digital signal instead and defaults to stereo. This issue caused me to return the CC Ultra I had bought, and until Google takes the time to UNDERSTAND what people are telling them about this, nothing will get done. All they need to do is get the CC to downmix properly to the lower DD signal instead of the DD+.

I have the same issue. I use my Samsung TV with ARC back to my amp. Chromecast with Plex works fine with DD, so we know CC can handle it, but Netflix gives no surround. We can blame Google/CC for this, but the question is, why does Netflix use DD+? I hope there will be a fix from Netflix or Google.

I think the problem lies with Netflix who build the app for Android.
Seems to be they are not interested in customers wanting to have that extra experience in the sense of viewing a good movie in Dolby 5.1 from Chromecast.

I have the exact same issue even when plugged directly into the home theatre HDMI (which is the recommendation), I can cast from the computer to CC in 5.1, and from my android phones PLEX to CC and they both work perfectly in 5.1 which shows its nothing to do with the hardware. It's completely the Netflix app. I called Netflix support and they told me they dropped 5.1 surround years ago, which is completely false. The support line are just clueless and tell you whatever just to get you off the phone so they don't have to deal with you. Unfortunately the problem lies with Netflix, but they're not interested in fixing it.

You typically need eARC to pass DD+ or higher to your audio output device, older TVs (pre c. 2017) only do DD via ARC. Even so, DD should be doing 5.1 surround. Check that the casting device is showing 5.1 audio in the app. I get DD+ on most Netflix content and Dolby Vision on supported titles. Unfortunately Netflix doesn't offer Dolby Atmos via Chromecast and I can only get HDR10 through my HTPC stream. Is the lack of Chromecast Atmos support the fault of Netflix or Google? I know the Chromecast can playback both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, but Netflix is my only source of content with these features.

Same issue here. I have an audio extractor and Sonos beam+2 Sonos One.
Works like charm with Sony PS4 as input and I have 5.1 Dolby from Netflix and games.
But Chromecas Ultra can't give me 5.1 in any application.
No option appears on the iPhone Netflix app to switch to an audio track on with 5.1 Dolby on all titles which do have it on PS4
So why would you call this thing Ultra??
Update:
I discovered that Sonos Beam cat understands DD+ only older Dolby. Got from Sonos:
“ Set the audio output to Dolby, Dolby Digital, Stereo, PCM, or Auto. These are the audio formats that Sonos supports.
Please note that Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, and DTS audio signals are not supported. If you're still getting unsupported format, try setting your TV audio output to Stereo or PCM.”
Then why Chromecast can’t provide older formats?

Having researched the issue google cc blame others, it's a real shame they cannot build in the sound downgrade setting as default in the cc options. Same story. I do not have the option for Dolby Digital. My CC is connected to an audio extractor, which can run 4K videos, DD+ and DTS Master Audio. However for the CC the connection is SPDIF, so the limit would be DD. Howeer the only audio option in Netflix using IOS is stereo.
This is simply not good enough in 2019.
My next switch would be for an Apple TV to get this resolved in my Home Cinema

Same story for couple of years of trying to make google understand they should be able to downmix to Dolby Digital when Dolby Digital Plus is not available.
Chromecast seems to handle 5.1 when content is DD (and not DD+), as plex with chromecast (and same Marantz AV with no DD+) gives surround sound, but most likely because the content is in DD
Maybe other option is that Netflix could provide the downmix to DD of their content when DD+ is not supported, but not sure if they can...

My Chromecast Ultra is plugged into my receiver which supports DD+. But I get no surround sound option in Netflix, only Stereo.
The old FireTV stick is plugged in the HDMI slot right next to it and has no problem streaming 5.1. It's ridiculous that I have to switch back to Amazon's alternative every time I want to watch something with good sound quality.

Hello,
thanks, unfortunately my problem is still not resolved.
No multichannel audio thru VLC either (on other devices it is streaming well).
so from my point of view this is still a chromecast issue.
