Is anyone else having a problem with the new Chromecast with Google TV to output 5.1 in general? No matter what settings on my TV, Chromecast, etc. are or if I'm casting or watching from the apps on the device, it only outputs in stereo.

Doesn't seem to be capable. I have tried all settings to get VLC and many other apps to do Atmos and 5.1 but all are only stereo

Same problem here, If I connect it to an Onkyo Receiver it works with DD+ but if I connect it to a Sony TV which is connected to a Sony AV receiver with an optical fiber cable I only get PCM Stereo. I suppose Chormecast is unable to send bitstream through the HDMI. PS4, Fire TV or any other device does with the same devices and configuration, but Chromecast fail.

Any way it shows that supports Dolby Digital in advance audio settings, but I only get Stereo.

Do we have some hope to get a solution? I want to replace a Fire 4K with this Chromecast It works much better in any aspect but the audio

I have same issue with Chromecast with Google TV with my Sonos. I am using Sonos Beam and 2 play 1s for 5.1 surround. I have connected Beam with Hdmi ARC. If I use Netflix and Prime Video built into my 2016 Samsung TV then I get 5.1 audio. But if I use apps from Chromecast with Google TV then it only outputs stereo. My TV has Bitstream and Dolby Digital options selected.

By default Dolby Digital is shown as supported mode in settings. I have also tried manually selecting different other modes but nothing happens. When I open Netflix and select titles like Stranger Things which definitely has 5.1, then the 5.1 doesn't even display next to the title. This is really disappointing as I was looking forward to using it. If there isn't any update soon then I will have to return it as it renders my expensive audio setup useless.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for bringing this up and apologies for the late reply. Chromecast outputs surround sound if a particular app supports it, and if the Audio/Video Receiver (AVR) or TV it's plugged into tells the Chromecast over Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) that it supports 5.1, AC3 (Audio Coding 3), and AC3/EAC3 (Enhanced Audio Coding 3) surround sound. If the TV or AVR does not support one of these settings, Chromecast will not output surround sound.

I would just like to verify the following:
  • Is the content that you're trying to stream supports 5.1 surround sound?
  • Have you tried changing the HDMI ports? Usually, the 3rd HDMI port in our TV has the ARC HDMI input. You can check your TV manual for verification.
 Kind regards,
Craig

Hello, this is my config.

-   TV Sony W805A, none of the HDMI support ARC
-   AV receiver Sony HT-DDW890, doesn’t support audio through HDMI.

Both connected with optical cable.

I’ve a PS3, a PS4 and FireTV 4K connected to TV and all of them are working at 5.1.

Now the Chromecast was connected where the FireTV was and I tried to play the same content, Netflix, Disney+, HBO, etc. but none of them gets 5.1 audio, all I have is PCM 48 Stereo. With FireTV or PS4 the same movies in the same apps work fine.

I think the problem is that CCGTV doesn’t decode audio and doesn’t send it to TV as bitstream. only PCM, the same situation with Xbox One.

Could this be fixed with an update or is it a hardware limitation?

Thanks.

Looks like there are a bunch of us having this problem.

Funny part is that my TV is brand new, its a 2020 model released 3 months ago.

My Chromecast TV detects that the TV accepts a dolby digital and dolby digital plus audio stream. And netflix defaults to the 5.1 audio stream vs the stereo stream. When I check the TV system info, it shows that the it is receiving a dolby digital -dd stream, but it cannot seem to play the audio.

I think there is something wrong with the Chromecast TV's implementation of dolby digital.

How we get the attention of someone on the engineering team is beyond me.

Hi David, here's the info you asked for.

Is the content that you're trying to stream supports 5.1 surround sound?
Yes. I confirm that I get 5.1 using Netflix or Prime Video apps built into Samsung TV with titles such as Stranger Things, Narcos, etc. but same titles when loaded using Chromecast with Google TV only outputs stereo. So I can confirm there is not issue with content.

Have you tried changing the HDMI ports? Usually, the 3rd HDMI port in our TV has the ARC HDMI input. You can check your TV manual for verification.
Yes I have tried every combination including using optical cable. My Sonos Beam which supports ARC is connected to my 3rd HDMI which is ARC. Chromecast is connected to 1st HDMI. My Xbox One S is connected to 2nd HDMI. If I load Netflix app on TV or Xbox, I get 5.1 surround sound from my Sonos and it says 5.1 on Sonos app as well. But with Chromecast and same setup, the same titles output only stereo, which I can confirm via Sonos app as it can display what it is receiving in the app itself.
There is definitely issue here. How can TV's own Netflix app or Xbox's Netflix app output 5.1 using same setup but Chromecast can't?

If it helps for my previous reply, Sonos Beam supports Dolby Digital but does not support Dolby Digital Plus. The Netflix titles maybe in Dolby Digital Plus. But that shouldn't matter as per my understanding. Is Xbox able to convert Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital whereas Chromecast can't? I might be barking up wrong tree but it really is baffling why Chromecast is outputting stereo only.

The issues are because if the device you connect the CCwGTV to doesn't support DD+ the CCwGTV falls back to stereo/PCM instead of DD. This is a software issue/limitation since every device that only supports DD can "play" DD+ audio streams in 5.1 too since the DD audio stream is embedded into the DD+ audio stream. It's not sent concurrently as a separate stream of audio. The streaming device (in this case the CC) just needs to recognize this correctly so you get the right kind of output. So yes, even if Netflix, Disney+ etc. audio streams are DD+ they can output in DD 5.1 too if you tell them to which the CCwGTV does not for whatever reason.

There is no transcoding needed for this to happen. Even super cheap streaming devices know what to do in this case so it's super puzzling why the CCwGTV does not!
