Why can't I cast my desktop on my tv anymore, could do it a week ago and it just stopped working 0 Recommended Answers 22 Replies 290 Upvotes

Casting my desktop results in a failure but casting a tab works just fine

Hello, thanks for taking the time to post your issue.
 
If your Windows computer is on Windows 7 or higher, try each of the following before moving on to the next:
  • Try Chromecast on the SAME 2.4 (Chromecast 1st gen requirement) Ghz frequency wifi router band as your Android devices
  • Refresh your Media Router:
1. Ensure that you're on the latest version of the Chrome Browser
2. Open a new tab in Chrome.
3. Type chrome://flags/#media-router into the address bar.
4. Check and see if the status is "Enabled". If it is, try "Disabling" and refresh your Chrome Browser.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 but this time Enable the option again.  
6. Look in the upper right hand corner for the "More Options" icon 
7. Click on the "Cast" option. 
  • Make sure you power the Chromecast device with the provided power supply into an open electrical outlet, not using a USB input on your TV or other device.
  • Your computer and Chromecast device should be within ~15 feet (4 meters) of each other. Your Chromecast device should be ~15 feet (4 meters) away from your router, or less.
  • Reset your Windows browser default to Chrome.
  • Conduct a Chromecast Factory Data Reset.
  • Reboot your Wi-fi router and/or internet service provider modem or gateway
  • Turn Windows Defender OFF.

Only desktop cast is available. Try all of the above and did not help.
I"m trying to cast on a Sony tv with a buit in google cast. It connects momentarily and disconnects itself.
Was better before the update.

Try opening the cast to desk top option. Click on cast  when the screen to select ok pops up click on the picture of the desktop then click ok..... took me 2 days to figure out to click on the picture.

Before the Chromecast update I could cast desktop from Windows laptop or Chromebook, now neither works. I have a Chromecast plugged into a tv. I know to click on the desktop photo, that does not solve. It connects and drops the connection, something happened in the new update, this never happened until the update.

Thank you. It solved my issue. Have to remember to click on the picture of the Desktop, otherwise I repeatedly and frustratingly got the Failed to Connect... error when casting Desktop to chromecast (1.39.151425) from Chrome (Version 73.0.3683.86)

After two quite pleasant conversations with Google Chat Support (and a phonecall), I can say that my situation has improved but is not resolved. Here are notes for others to try, which may help your situations.
1) Go to chrome://flags in your Chrome browser
2) in the search bar start typing "Load Media Router Component Extension" and set it to "Enabled"
3) search again for "Connect to Cast devices on all IP Adresses" and set it to "Enabled"
4) finally search for "Views Cast dialog" and set it to "disabled"
5) I had also disabled "Use all upcoming UI features" but I have my doubts about this setting and have subsequently put it back to default without any change to my situation.
6) I have fiddled with Windows Firewall, which had no affect
7) I have fiddled with my anti-virus, which had no affect.
8) On the basis of the 3 Chrome settings mentioned above, I can now see the pop-up window that allows me to select which desktop screen to share.(I couldn't see that at all before). I successfully cast my desktop BUT it crashes after 20-30 seconds everytime.

My tablet cannot locate cast destination. Worked perfectly well before but recently it has become recurring. What do i do? Thanks
