My Chromecast is not streaming video.

When you post about a new issue, please describe exactly what you are seeing (any error messages? What were you doing before this issue came up? What are the repro steps? etc) In addition, include the following information with your answer (not providing this information may result in a delay in response):What OS are you using to cast (Android 4.4, Windows 7, OSx 10.8, etc.)?What is the make and model of the device you're using to cast? What is the make and model of your router? What is the make and model of your television?
My Chromecast is not working properly. Local-network casting (screen mirroring from my Android phone and tab casting from Chrome on Windows) works fine, and I can cast, from Play Music on my phone, songs that are in my library but have not been downloaded on the phone itself; however, casting any sort of video streaming from the Internet (through the Youtube or the BBC iPlayer apps, from example) does not work. No error message is shown (YouTube just says "There was an error playing this video. Please choose another video." on any video I try). The Chromecast has been properly set up to connect to my (password-protected) wifi network, and the videos I'm trying to stream do play on my phone, PC and any other device. I've tried casting from an iPhone, as well, to no avail. Any help would be appreciated...

For starters, do you have the Google Cast Extension installed on your PC and the iOS Chromecast app installed on your iPhone?

If yes to both, what happens if you follow these steps?

1. Unplug the extender or Chromecst device from the TV. Plug Chromecast device or dongle into the HDMI extender, connect the USB power cable into your Chromecast dongle, plug the other end of the USB power cable into the power adapter and plug the power adapter into your electrical outlet or power strip. Do NOT plug the USB power cable into an open USB port on your TV.
2. Do NOT plug the HDMI extender into your TV.
3. Reboot your DSL/Cable modem and/or ISP Router by unplugging the power at the device(s), not at the power outlet, wait about two minutes and re-plug-in the device power. Wait for device(s) to re-boot.
4. Factory Data Reset (FDR) your Chromecast dongle by physically holding down the button on your Chromecast for at least 25 seconds or until the solid light begins flashing.
5. Plug the HDMI extender with the Chromecast dongle attached into your TV,
6. Double check that your Chromecast dongle, smartphone, tablet or laptop are using the same 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network.
7. Download the Chromecast app on your smartphone, tablet or laptop to set up your Chromecast.
8. Turn your TV on. If you don't see the Chromecast welcome page on your TV, no worries use your TV remote control (look for the Input or Source button) to change the TV input to the same HDMI port as the Chromecast (e.g. HDMI2).
9. Do you see the SET ME UP screen on your TV?
10. If YES to the question above, click on the Yep, got it button on the online manual setup and follow steps.

11. If NO, more information would be helpful:
  • What OS are you using to cast (Android 4.4, Windows 8.1, iOS 7, Mac Mavericks OSx 10.8, etc.)?
  • What is the make and model of the device you're using to cast?
  • What is the make and model of your router?
  • What is the make and model of your television?
  • What country are you in?
  • Describe your issue in detail.

The quickest and easiest thing to try first is to reboot your router, especially if it's an older model.

To go beyond that we need you to answer those questions you skipped over so we have a clue what your setup is.

Alright, problem solved; my BT-issued router (included with my BT Infinity Internet service) had a smart setup screen activated for new devices connecting to it, and this was preventing the Chromecast to connect to the Internet.
Thanks to everybody who replied!

Hi, I also have a BT Infinity router and the same error message when I try to stream videos. How did you solve the problem?

For others reading this thread, based on Mario's reply to his post, here are the steps to disable Smart on your BT Home hubs 3, 4 & 5.

The feature posing a problem is Smart Setup, not Smart Wireless, but thanks, James, for trying to help us Chromecast users on BT.
Here is a simple article that explains the issue and how to solve it: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/127977-got-google-chromecast-got-a-bt-home-hub-you-might-want-to-read-this
(Googling "Chromecast BT" was enough to solve the issue in 2 minutes, go figure...)
