Google Nest, Chromecast, and Google TV Streamer security tips

Anyone who can access the Wi-Fi network to which you have connected your Google Nest or Home speaker or display, or Chromecast, or Google TV Streamer also has access to your devices. Our devices are designed this way intentionally, as this allows, for example, everyone on your home Wi-Fi network to cast content to your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer. Here are some recommendations to help keep your devices secure on your network.

Use caution when connecting to Wi-Fi networks

Devices that works with Google Cast typically can't connect to networks with “captive portals.” However, some hotels, university buildings or other structures may offer a broadly-available network that can be accessed with just a password. When you connect to such a network, anyone who is also on the network can also control your device, cast content to it, and see information about your device (what accounts are linked to it). Use care when connecting your device to such networks.

Keep your Wi-Fi network secure

  • Keep your router firmware up-to-date to ensure the best performance and device compatibility.
  • Make sure your Wi-Fi network is protected with a strong password.
  • Update your Wi-Fi password periodically to ensure that only devices you trust are using your network.
  • Only give your network name and password to people you trust.
  • Use a security protocol, such as WPA2, to further protect your network and ensure device compatibility.

Check your advanced router settings

  1. Using a web browser, open your router settings.
  2. Navigate to the Port Forwarding setting.
  3. Consider deleting ports 8008, 8009, and 8443 if they're listed. These ports may be unsafely exposing your devices to the internet.
  4. Save your changes if needed.

If you need assistance accessing your router settings or want more information on your network's overall security, contact your internet service provider or the manufacturer of your router or gateway.
