Set up and use the Google Home app

Set up Google devices such as:

You can control devices added to your Google Home app using your:

Navigate the Google Home app

The Google Home app has three sections: Home , Activity Activity icon and Automations .

Home

Your Home tab helps you easily manage your devices. This includes quick access to features that help you stay organised and in control.

Home selector: Displays the icon of your home at the top. If you have multiple homes, tap your home icon to switch between different homes.
Ask Home: In the Google Home app, use the search bar to find devices, ask questions or access AI features with a Google Home Premium subscription. Learn more about features available with Ask Home.
Add devices, speaker groups, automations, people, services and homes: Tap Add at the top.
Device dashboards: At the top, tap the category you want to open. Or swipe horizontally to move from one dashboard to the next.
- Favourites: Quick access to devices, automations and more marked as your favourite.
- All devices: Shows all the devices that you’ve added in the Google Home app, organised by room.
- Cameras: Shows your camera's video. Multiple compatible cameras are displayed together.
- Lighting: Control all compatible lights in your home or a specific room.
- Climate: Displays your thermostat and temperature sensors in one place.
- Smoke and CO: Shows the status of your home’s smoke and CO alarms.

Wi-Fi: Runs speed tests and manages your Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi and Google Wifi.

Favourites

Important: The Assistant Favourites tile is no longer available. Use the Gemini app for voice experiences.

To access your favourites list, tap Favourites at the top. Your favourites let you:

Check the status of a device or automation.
Touch and hold to open all device or automation settings.
Quickly access basic controls:
- Tap to turn a device on or off.
- Tap to start an action or automation.
- Use a slider to adjust brightness or media volume.
You can access the:
- Media mini-player: Shows what media you're currently playing and what device it's on.

Customise favourites

To change the actions, automations or devices in your favourites: Scroll down and tap Edit . Tick or untick the box next to the tile to add or remove it from Favourites.
To organise your favourites: Tap Re-order to drag the tiles into the position you want.

When you add or edit your favourites in the mobile Google Home app, they'll automatically sync on other devices. If desired, you can create a set of favourites specific to your Pixel Tablet and supported smartwatches.

Create specific favourites for your Pixel Tablet

On your Pixel Tablet's home panel, tap Edit .
- Alternatively, open your Google Home app and tap Favourites.
A pop-up message 'Edit unique favourites on Pixel Tablet' will appear.
- Tap Edit to create unique favourites for your Pixel Tablet.
- Tap No, thanks to return to using the Google Home app-synced favourites.
Tick or untick the box next to the tile to add or remove it from Favourites.
Tap Save. A notification will confirm that you saved the changes.

Create specific favourites for your supported watches

On your watch’s Favourites tile, scroll down and tap Edit favourites.
Tap Open on phone, which will open the Google Home app on your connected phone.
Add or remove tiles to customise your favourites.
Tap Next.
Rearrange your favourites on this screen.
Tap Save. A message will confirm that you saved the changes.

All devices

Tap All devices at the top to check all linked devices. The devices are organised by the room that they're assigned to.

Device controls

Touch and hold your device's tile to open all of its settings or controls. Different types of devices have different controls. Some device tiles show the device status or certain controls.

Google Nest and Home speakers and displays:
- Control the speaker or display's volume and equalisation (EQ).
- Play, pause, skip or stop media.
- Access settings.
Google streaming devices:
- Control the display's volume or access settings.
- Play, pause, skip or stop media.
Pixel Tablet (Hub Mode only): Control the Charging Speaker Dock's volume and stop casting.
Cameras: Check the live video stream from your compatible cameras. Newer cameras also let you change settings and check history.
Thermostat: Adjust your compatible thermostat's set point, change modes and check the ambient temperature. Other settings might be available for some thermostat models.
Lights: Turn your compatible smart lights on and off and adjust their brightness or colour, if supported.
Smart plugs: Turn your compatible smart plug on and off.
Speaker groups: Access the group's settings.

Activity

In the Activity tab, you can check your home's history. This includes camera events, voice interactions and device states.

To check specific types of activity, tap Filter. Pick from any combination of events and devices to find what's most important to you. After choosing the filters you want to use, tap Save.

Automations

Important: Everyone in the household can check when these automations start. Automations are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases. Do not create automations that could result in injury or harm if they fail to start or stop. Automations can depend on working Internet, Wi-Fi and service availability from both Google and the third parties that manufacture the devices included in the automations. Automations may not always work, and Google isn't responsible for any harm or losses incurred due to failed automations.

In the Automations tab , you can create and manage automations for your home and its members.

Upcoming automations: You can find the next five scheduled automations.
Your automations: All your created automations are listed. You can find basic information such as the name of your automation and if it's active or deactivated. You can tap on an automation to show more details and apply edits.

Manage your Google Account and home settings

To open the menu, at the top right of any of the main app screens, tap your profile picture or initial.

From the menu, you can:

Access your Inbox, home settings, voice assistant settings and more
Switch to a different home
Add and manage accounts
Go to the Google Nest Help Centre or submit feedback
