What's new with Chromecast and the Google Home app

The new Chromecast has a brand new look with improved functionality, faster Wi-FI and a sleeker design. The updated Google Home app makes it even easier to find the content you love, enjoy photos via backdrop, and play games.

What's different with the new Chromecast

Chromecast has a brand new look with a higher video resolution and less buffering. Get it at the same low cost of $35. Note: The new Chromecast is not available to purchase in all locations. Here is a list of countries where the new Chromecast and Chromecast (1st gen) is available.

Better design The new design fits into more TVs, especially those with crowded HDMI ports, without the need for adapters or extension cables
Improved Wi-Fi performance Chromecast houses the latest Wi-Fi technology, including dual band 2.4 and 5GHz support, and support for 802.11ac. Use the latest and greatest routers on the market and get the highest quality video and audio with less buffering
Adaptive antenna system Includes three separate antennas and ensures you’re always using the best antenna and radio frequency given the specific conditions of your home Wi-Fi environment
More colors Black, lemonade, coral

  • You can mirror any tab from your Chrome browser to your TV, giving you access to even more content from the web

What’s On tab

Helps you discover featured content from the Cast apps you already have installed on your phone

  • Currently works with several top content apps, including Youtube, Google Play Movies, WatchESPN, and Comedy Central
  • Get quick access to all of your installed apps that work with Chromecast. As your existing apps become Cast-enabled, they will automatically show up on the list.
Devices tab

Lets you personalize and control your Chromecast devices

  • Play, pause, stop or change the volume. The Google Home app makes every device in your house a remote control for Chromecast
  • Quickly learn more about the images on your TV with timely cards that pop up in this tab
Get Apps tab

Help you find the latest apps, games, and more that are Cast-enabled

  • Apps are now sorted by category, like sports apps or party apps
  • See previews of what you can get from top content apps to help you find the most relevant apps for you
  • You can also view and redeem offers, like a free movie from Google Play

Helps you find where you can watch content

  • Use voice search to quickly find where you can watch movies and TV shows.
  • In addition to showing where you can watch a specific movie or show, you'll get information about the movie, Rotten Tomatoes scores, and a link to watch the trailer
  • Voice search pulls results from many top video apps, including Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, Watch ABC, Comedy Central, Crackle, and Google Play Movies.

What's New Description 
More content sources In addition to famous works of art, geo images and news headlines, you can now customize your backdrop with more 3rd party content sources, including Getty and 500PX
Improved customization Customize what you see on your TV screen with your own personal photos from Facebook, Google Photos, and Flickr
