Set up Chromecast Audio

Let's get you casting! To set up your Chromecast Audio, you'll need:
  • A Chromecast Audio device
  • Latest version of the Google Home app
  • Access to an available power outlet and a secure wireless network.
  • Meet the minimum Operating System (OS) requirements to run the Google Home app .
  • Access to a secure wireless network (make sure you have the wireless network password handy)
  • Connection to Wi-Fi (either 2.4GHz or 5GHz) and an internet connection. 
  • A compatible Android or iOS device or tablet, or Mac, Windows or Chromebook computer (see list below). 
  • Availability and performance of certain features, services and applications are device- and network-dependent and may not be available in all areas; subscription(s) may be required, and additional terms, conditions and/or charges may apply.

Set up Chromecast Audio from:

Android phone or tablet (Android 4.1 and higher)
  1. Plug in your Chromecast Audio.
  2. Install the Google Home app by navigating to g.co/home/setup on your Chromecast Audio supported Android device.

  3. Make sure to connect your mobile device/tablet to the same network that you intend to use to set up your Chromecast Audio device.

  4. Tap ACCEPT to agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
  5. In the top right corner of the screen, tap Devices .
  6. To allow Google Home app to access this device’s location, tap Allow.
  7. Choose the Chromecast Audio you want to set up. Tap Set Up > Continue.
  8. We are now establishing a connection with your Chromecast Audio.
    1. If the app can’t establish connection, move closer to the Chromecast Audio and tap Try Again. If there is trouble reading info from Chromecast Audio, tap Try Again.  
  9. When Google Home app is successfully connected to the Chromecast Audio, tap Continue.
  10. Turn on your speakers and adjust the volume to a low but audible level. Tap Play Test Sound.
  11. Sound test
    • If you hear the sound, tap I Heard It. If you want to confirm that things are working, tap the speaker icon and tap Play Again.
    • If you didn’t hear the sound,
      • Make sure the audio cable on your Chromecast Audio is plugged into the correct input.
      • Make sure your speaker is powered on and the correct input is selected
      • Make sure the volume on your speaker is not muted.
  12. Select your region. Touch Continue.
  13. Change the name of your Chromecast Audio to something distinct by deleting the current name and typing in a new name. Note: Guest mode and Send Chromecast usage data and crash reports to Google are enabled by default. If you don't want either of these enabled, tap the check mark next to the corresponding prompt. Tap Continue.
  14. Choose the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to your Chromecast Audio. To automatically fetch the password for this network on this device, tap OK. The password will populate in the password field. Note: Android L and above is required to auto fetch the password. Tap Continue. ​
    1. You can also manually enter your password. Tap Continue.​  
  15. Chromecast Audio will now attempt to connect to the provided Wi-Fi network. 
    1. If it fails, tap Try again.  
  16. If your Chromecast Audio needs an update, it will automatically update at this time and will let you know when the update is complete. Here's more information on updates to Chromecast Audio in case the update is taking longer than expected.
  17. When Chromecast Audio has connected to your Wi-Fi, tap Continue.   
  18. If you're not signed into a Google account, tap SIGN IN to personalize your features for a better Google Cast experience. Then tap Allow Email Notifications for tips & tricks, offers, and more sent straight to your email. Tap CONTINUE.
  19. If you're already signed into a Google account, tap Allow Email Notifications for tips & tricks, offers, and more sent straight to your email. Tap CONTINUE.
  20. You are now ready to cast. Tap Learn to Cast to watch a tutorial on how to cast. Tap Skip to begin casting. 
  21. Note: Verify that your mobile device/tablet is connected to the same network as your Chromecast Audio device.
iOS phone or tablet (iOS 7.0 and higher)
  1. Plug in your Chromecast Audio. 
  2. Install the Google Home app by navigating to g.co/home/setup on your Chromecast Audio supported iOS device.

    Or click to download the Google Home app for iOS.
  3. Tap ACCEPT to agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
  4. Google Home app will ask you to turn on Bluetooth. Tap Turn on Bluetooth.
    1. ​Highly recommended: Turn on Bluetooth to help improve the set up process. You can also swipe up from bottom and turn on Bluetooth or tap SETTINGS to turn on Bluetooth and return to the Google Home app.
  5. If you don't want to use Bluetooth for set up,
    1. Tap your iPhone’s Home button > Go to your iOS Settings > Wi-Fi
    2. Connect to the Wi-Fi network that matches your Chromecast Audio device. Look for something like ChromecastAudioXXXX.
    3. Navigate back to the Google Home app. Your device should now be detected. Tap Continue. 
  6. In the top right corner of the screen, tap Devices  .
  7. Choose the Chromecast Audio you want to set up. Tap Set Up > Continue. 
  8. We are now establishing a connection with your Chromecast Audio.
    1. If the app can’t establish connection, move closer to the Chromecast Audio and tap Try Again. If there is trouble reading info from Chromecast Audio, tap Try Again.

  16. Chromecast Audio will now attempt to connect to the provided Wi-Fi network. 
    1. If it fails, tap Try again.  
  17. If your Chromecast Audio needs an update, it will automatically update at this time and will let you know when the update is complete.  Here's more information on updates to Chromecast Audio. in case the update is taking longer than expected.
  18. When Chromecast Audio has connected to your Wi-fi, tap Continue.

  20. If you're already signed into a Google account, tap Allow Email Notifications for tips & tricks, offers, and more sent straight to your email. Tap CONTINUE.
  21. You are now ready to cast. Tap Learn to Cast to go through an interactive cast tutorial on how to cast. Tap Skip if you don’t want to go through the tutorial. 
  22. Note: Verify that your mobile device/tablet is connected to the same network as your Chromecast Audio device.
Chromebook (Chrome 28 and higher)
  1. Make sure you're using the latest version of Chrome by navigating to “Settings > About Google Chrome” and update your Chrome browser to the latest version, if necessary. If you're having trouble, here's how to update Chrome.
  2. Navigate to chromecast.com/setup from the Chrome browser on your computer.
  3. Once on the chromecast.com/setup page,  click the link to “Set up your Chromecast using this computer”.
  4. Chrome will now look for Chromecast Audio devices that need to be set up.
  5. Click the Chromecast Audio device that needs to be set up. It will be something like ChromecastAudioXXXX. Click Set Me Up.
  6. Setup will try to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot produced by your Chromecast Audio device. If this is successful, move to step 8. If this is not successful, you will asked to manually connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot of your Chromecast Audio device. Go to your Wi-Fi menu and select the Wi-Fi network that matches your Chromecast Audio device name. Important: Make sure you’ve successfully connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot before moving to the next step. This can take a few minutes. Note: You’ll lose your Internet connection for few minutes until setup is complete. This is expected.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Turn on your speakers and adjust the volume to a low but audible level. Click Play Sound. If you hear the sound, click Yes.
    If you don’t hear the sound, Click No.
    Make sure the audio cable on your Chromecast Audio is plugged into the correct input.
    Make sure your speaker is powered on and the correct input is selected.
    Make sure the volume on your speaker is not muted. Click Play Sound Again.
  9. Click Yes.
  10. Change the name of your Chromecast Audio by typing in a new name (ex. Patio) or you can leave it as the default name. Click Looks Good.
  11. Choose your Wi-Fi network by clicking the upside down arrow . Enter your password. Click Connect.
  12. Setup will try to automatically connect to your Wi-Fi network. If this is successful, move to step 14. If this is not successful, go back to your Wi-Fi menu and choose the same Wi-Fi network you picked in step 11. Important: Make sure you’ve successfully connected to the Wi-Fi network before moving on to the next step. This can take a few minutes.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Once setup has successfully completed, you will see a list of all of your available Cast devices.
  15. Your Chromecast Audio is now ready to cast. You can cast from your favorite cast-enabled mobile app or cast a tab's audio from the Chrome browser on your computer.
  16.  Download the Google Home app to get the most out of you Chromecast Audio. 
     
Windows Computer (Windows 7 and higher)
  1. Make sure you're using the latest version of Chrome by navigating to “Settings > About Google Chrome” and update your Chrome browser to the latest version, if necessary. If you're having trouble, here's how to update Chrome.
  2. Navigate to chromecast.com/setup from the Chrome browser on your computer.
  3. Once on the chromecast.com/setup page,  click the link to “Set up your Chromecast using this computer”.
  4. Chrome will now look for Chromecast Audio devices that need to be set up.
  5. Click the Chromecast Audio device that needs to be set up. It will be something like ChromecastAudioXXXX. Click Set Me Up.
  6. Setup will try to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot produced by your Chromecast Audio device. If this is successful, move to step 8. If this is not successful, you will asked to manually connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot of your Chromecast Audio device. Go to your Wi-Fi menu and select the Wi-Fi network that matches your Chromecast Audio device name. Important: Make sure you’ve successfully connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot before moving to the next step. This can take a few minutes.   7. Click Next.

Mac OS X Computer (Mac OS 10.9 and higher)
  1. Make sure you're using the latest version of Chrome by navigating to “Settings > About Google Chrome” and update your Chrome browser to the latest version, if necessary. If you're having trouble, here's how to update Chrome.
  2. Navigate to chromecast.com/setup from the Chrome browser on your computer.
