Ethernet adaptor for Chromecast: Quick start guide

If you wish to connect Chromecast without using Wi-Fi, the Ethernet adaptor for Chromecast lets you connect your Chromecast directly to your router through your wired Ethernet connection.

To set up your Ethernet adaptor for Chromecast, you'll need:

• A Chromecast device and a display with an available HDMI port
• A mobile device
• An Ethernet cable connected to a working Internet router
• A standard household socket or other source of AC power
• The Ethernet Adaptor
  • Note: The adaptor is different depending on your region and the Chromecast you’re using.

 

To attach your Ethernet adaptor, follow these steps:

1. Plug your Chromecast into an available HDMI slot on your display. Then, plug the Ethernet adaptor’s cable-end into your Chromecast device’s micro-USB port.
   Note: The Ethernet Adaptor provides both power and Internet connectivity to your Chromecast device.
2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet adaptor.
   Note: Make sure that the other end of your Ethernet cable is connected to a functioning router that has Internet connectivity. The Ethernet adaptor won't provide Internet access to your Chromecast unless it is connected to a working router with Internet access.
3. Plug the Ethernet adaptor into the AC power source near the display to which you plan to connect your Chromecast. Note: The length of the power cord for the Ethernet adaptor is 78 inches (6.5 feet or 1.98 meters) so you'll need to be sure the power source is within that distance from your Chromecast device.
4. Open the Google Home app from the device with which you wish to set up your Chromecast and follow the setup instructions.

Important:

• The Ethernet adaptor is designed for use only with Chromecast devices. Use with other devices may damage the device, your router, and/or your Ethernet adaptor.
• The Ethernet adaptor may get warm; this is normal. If it gets hot, disconnect the Ethernet adaptor’s cable-end from your Chromecast and let the Ethernet adaptor cool before unplugging the Ethernet adaptor from the wall or resuming operation.
• Don't expose the Ethernet adaptor to water or extreme conditions (moisture, heat, cold, dust) as it may malfunction or cease to work when exposed to such elements.
• Don't try to disassemble or repair your Ethernet adaptor yourself. Doing so voids the limited warranty and could harm you, your display, your router, your Ethernet adaptor and/or your Chromecast.
• Your Ethernet adaptor is not designed, manufactured or intended for use in hazardous environments requiring fail-safe performance in which the failure of the Ethernet adaptor could lead directly to death, personal injury, or severe physical or environmental damage.
• Take care when handling the Ethernet adaptor to avoid electric shock.
• Note: During setup of older Chromecasts, you’ll need the Google Home app on a mobile device connected to Wi-Fi, even if you’re using the Ethernet adaptor.

Can't cast? Try these troubleshooting steps

Having trouble casting content using your Ethernet adaptor? First let's make sure that your Chromecast is working correctly. If one step doesn't fix the issue, try the next one.

1. Reboot your Chromecast by unplugging it from the power source. Leave it unplugged for one minute before plugging the power cable back in.
2. Reboot your router by unplugging it from the power source. Leave it unplugged for one minute before plugging the power cable back in.
3. Make sure that your mobile device or laptop is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Chromecast.
4. Try casting using another device or laptop.
5. Close and re-open the app that you’re trying to cast from.

1. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet adaptor (see Step 2 in the image above). Leave it unplugged for one minute before plugging it back in.
2. Make sure that the Ethernet cable is plugged into an available LAN port on your Wi-Fi router.
3. Make sure that all connections points are plugged in securely. (For example, check that your Ethernet cable is securely connected to the Ethernet port and that your Chromecast is securely connected to the HDMI port.)
