Set up Chromecast

Get started

  • A Chromecast device
  • Latest version of the Google Home app
  • A display device with an HDMI input, for example, a high-definition television (HDTV)
  • Access to an available power outlet and a secure wireless network.
  • Meet the minimum Operating System (OS) requirements to run the Google Home app
  • An internet connection. 
  • Access to a secure wireless network (make sure you have the wireless network password handy)
  • For Chromecast (1st generation), connection to a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4G network. For Chromecast, connection to a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac 2.4/5G network. For Chromecast Ultra, connection to a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac 5G network.
  • A compatible phone or tablet, or Mac, Windows or Chromebook computer (see list below). 
  • Availability and performance of certain features, services and applications are device- and network-dependent and may not be available in all areas; subscription(s) may be required, and additional terms, conditions and/or charges may apply.


  1. Make sure  your phone or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you will use with your Chromecast.
  2. Plug in your Chromecast device. Change the input on your TV remote until you see the Set me up card on your screen. This is done using the Input, Source, or Menu button. You may have to cycle through a few inputs before finding the correct one (e.g. HDMI1, HDMI2, etc.)
  3. Install the Google Home app by navigating to on your Chromecast supported Android device.

  4. Tap ACCEPT to agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
  5. In the top right corner of the screen, tap Devices .
  6. To allow Google Home app to access this device’s location, tap Allow.
  7. Choose the Chromecast you want to set up. Tap Set Up > Continue. 
  8. We are now establishing a connection with your Chromecast.
    1. If the app can’t establish connection, move closer to the Chromecast and tap Try Again. If there is trouble reading info from Chromecast, tap Try Again.  
  9. When Google Home app is successfully connected to the Chromecast, tap Continue.
  10. The code on your phone should match the code on your TV. Touch I See the Code.
  11. Change the name of your Chromecast to something distinct by deleting the default name and typing in a new name. Note: Guest mode and Send Chromecast usage data and crash reports to Google are enabled by default. If you don't want to enable them, touch the check marks next to their corresponding prompts. Touch Continue. 
  12. Choose the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to your Chromecast. To automatically fetch the password for this network on this device, tap OK. The password will populate in the password field. Note: Android L and above is required to auto fetch the password. Tap Continue. ​
    1. You can also manually enter your password. Tap Continue.​  
  13. Chromecast will now attempt to connect to the provided Wi-Fi network. 
    1. If it fails, tap Try again.  
  14. If your Chromecast built-in device needs an update, it will automatically begin updating and will let you know when completed. Here’s more information on updates to your Chromecast  in case the update takes longer than expected.
  15. When the Chromecast device has connected to your Wi-Fi, tap Continue.   

  16. If you're not signed into a Google account, tap SIGN IN to personalize your features for a better Chromecast experience. Then tap Allow Email Notifications for tips & tricks, offers, and more sent straight to your email. Tap CONTINUE. Go to step 18. 
  17. If you're already signed into a Google account, tap Allow Email Notifications for tips & tricks, offers, and more sent straight to your email. Tap CONTINUE.
  18. You are now ready to cast. Tap Learn to Cast to watch a tutorial on how to cast. Tap Skip to begin casting.
