Troubleshoot Chromecast connection

Here are some things you might experience if your Chromecast has a weak connection to either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth:

  • The light on your Chromecast is blinking.
  • Your Chromecast isn't discoverable in the Google Home app .
  • The Google Home app says your Chromecast is offline.
  • The TV says your Chromecast is offline.

To improve your Chromecast connection and performance, try these steps:

  1. Make sure your mobile devices and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network.
    1. Check your Chromecast Wi-Fi network.
      1. Chromecast with Google TV (HD) or Chromecast with Google TV (4K): At the top right of your TV screen, select your account icon and then Settings and then Network & Internet.
      2. Other Chromecasts: On your mobile device, open the Home app and then touch and hold your Chromecast's tile and then Settings and then Device information and then Wi-Fi.
    2. You can usually check the Wi-Fi network of your mobile device in its Settings app.
  2. If your router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, make sure your Chromecast is on the 5 GHz network.
  3. Update your router's firmware, if needed. Sometimes routers have bugs, and there are firmware fixes to address them. Make sure your router is running the most updated software.
  4. Restart your Chromecast. Unplug the power cable and then wait 3 seconds and then plug the power cable back in.
  5. Restart your modem or router. Check the manufacturer for instructions.
  6. To help prevent Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference, move your Chromecast further away from your TV. Also, don't let it touch other devices, wires, or cables.
  7. Use an Ethernet adapter to connect your Chromecast to your router. This will give you a direct, hardwire connection to the internet and alleviate your home Wi-Fi network.
  8. Check that your wireless network can support the number of devices connected to it.
  9. Move your router to within 20 feet of your Chromecast.
  10. Factory reset your Chromecast.
