Use multi-room control on your speaker or display

With multi-room control, you can group any combination of Google Nest or Home speakers and displays, and Chromecast devices together to play music in multiple rooms or transfer media to a speaker group.

Compatible devices include the following:

  • Speakers: Nest Audio, Google Home, Google Nest Mini (2nd gen), Google Home Mini (1st gen), Google Home Max
  • Displays: Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max
  • Nest Wifi point
  • Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast Audio

Add a device to playback

From your Nest display

  1.  On your Nest display, when media is playing, tap the active media card to bring up the media player.
  2. At the bottom left corner of your screen, tap Devices to find a list of available devices.
  3. Tap the device you want to add. Media will begin to play on any device selected.

From the Google Home app

With music or other media playing:
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap the current media session. It'll show any compatible devices that are linked to your account or on your Wi-Fi network.
  3. Tap the device you want to add. Audio will begin to play in sync on any devices selected.

Remove a device from playback

From your Nest display

Note: You need to first play to a group of devices before you can remove a device from playback.
  1. On your Nest display, tap the active media card to bring up the media player. 
  2. At the bottom left corner of your screen, tap Devices to find a list of available devices.
  3. Tap the device you want to remove. Media will immediately stop to play on that device.

From the Google Home app

Note: You need to first play to a group of devices before you can remove a device from playback.
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap the current media session. It'll show any compatible devices that are linked to your account or on your Wi-Fi network.
  3. Tap the device you want to remove. Audio will immediately stop to play on that device.

Transfer to speaker groups

From your Nest display

You can transfer your session at any time to a speaker group you’ve already created (for example, you can create a group for all the speakers in your home called "All Speakers"). Learn more about how to create a speaker group.

  1. On your Nest display, tap the active media card to bring up the media player.
  2. At the bottom left corner of your screen, tap Devices to find a list of available devices.
  3. Tap the speaker group you’d like to transfer to. Media will begin to play on that group of devices.

From the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap the current media session. It'll show any compatible devices that are linked to your account or on your Wi-Fi network.
  3. Tap the speaker group you’d like to transfer to. Audio will begin to play on that group of devices.

Control volume of an active device

From your Nest display

  1. On your Nest display, tap the active media card to bring up the media player.
  2. At the bottom left corner of your screen, tap Devices  to find a list of available devices. Note: Active devices will show volume control.
  3. Adjust the volume of your speaker.

From the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap the current media session. Active devices will show a slider for controlling volume.
  3. Adjust the volume of your speaker.

Using your voice

Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then "Set volume to 5" or "Set volume to 40%."
