Whenever I make a video call using Google Hangouts on my Lenovo C330 Chromebook (using the internal microphone and speakers), the person I am calling can hear an echo of themselves - they hear everything they say repeated back to them. The audio on my side is fine.
When I use headphones for a Hangouts video call, the echo is no longer there - the audio is great. I also have no issues when making a video call using Google Duo with my Chromebook's internal microphone and speaker.
Thoughts? Is there a setting that I can change in Hangouts (or elsewhere) to prevent the echo/audio feedback?
If the person you are calling can hear the echo of themselves when you're using the computer speaker & microphone, and they can't hear it when your you use the headset, 99 times out of 100 what is happening is that your computer's microphone is picking up their voice from the computer's speaker. The delay (echo) is caused by a small delay in processing the sound. Sometimes you can make this go away by reducing the volume from the speakers, however using the headset is probably a better option.

Is this with the hangouts.google.com web app? That is being replaced by Hangouts Meet so you could try that as a test. Duo and the new Hangouts woul be using improved noise cancelling technology.
You could try keeping the speaker volume low, perhaps?

Thanks for the suggestions. As you guessed, I am using the google.hangouts.com web app. I installed Hangouts Meet, but since I don't have a G Suite account it says I can't schedule meetings or initiate video calls. Is there a different version of Meet that I can use without G Suite?
My Chromebook is brand new so I've decided to return it and try a different one. The little bit I've used it, the Chromebook OS is perfect for what I need. Hopefully the next time around will go better!

Have everyone on the call mute their sessions except for the person speaking. Go around the attendees, everyone unmuting one-at-a-time. Does it turn out that one person, or combination of people, causes the echo?

Thanks, Joe and John, for your suggestions. I found that whenever anyone else talks on the video chat, they hear an echo of themselves. When I talk, it sounds normal. If I use headphones, no one hears an echo. I think that the issue is what John described, that my computer's microphone is picking up the voices from the computer's speaker.
Since I don't want to have to use headphones every time I video chat, and turning down the computer speaker volume didn't reduce the echo enough, I'm returning my Chromebook and will try out a different one, hopefully with better results.

John Ownby, that is an incorrect statement. If you want to stand by that answer, tell me why I have that horrible echo when using headphones and the speakers are not even powered on. Real phone circuits have echo cancelers. VOIP does not. So how do you approach the issue for someone like me who does not use speakers on Google Hangout or Google Voice calls?
