Introducing Chrome OS 86 to The Stable Channel

Hello Chromebook Community,

You should soon see an update on your device for Chrome OS 86! Here’s a list of new features and changes you’ll notice when you update to this new version of Chrome

Login to your Chromebook is easier and faster
We've made it easier for you to login to your Chromebook with two updates.

First, we created a new button which lets you review your password/PIN.  Simply click the eye-shaped icon to show password/PIN in clear text, review or compare with your password manager, and then submit. For security, we will turn the clear text into ***** after 5 seconds of inactivity and clear the entire input after 30 seconds of inactivity.

Second, we added the auto-submit functionality for an even faster unlock with PINs. In Settings, PIN users can opt in to have their device unlock automatically after entering the correct PIN, no tap/click needed.

Family Link and school account support for Android apps
Enables Family Link users to sign in to Android apps like Google Classroom using a school account to do schoolwork under parent supervision.

Change your cursor color
Now you can change the color of your cursor to improve its visibility, or just to add a personal touch to your Chromebook. There are seven colors available to choose from. To adjust your cursor, go to the “Mouse and touchpad” section of Settings.

A better experience for managing your media files in the Gallery app
We've refreshed the Gallery app UI and functionality. You'll see improvements in the cropping and filter features, along with other changes to make viewing and tweaking media a more fluid experience.

HDR support is now available on HDR-capable devices
Chrome OS now has the ability to play back HDR videos from sites like Youtube. HDR support requires a device with an HDR-capable internal display, and certain Chromebook models will support HDR with a HDR-capable external monitor.

Seamlessly integrate Emoji's into your communications with Emoji Suggestions
Chrome OS will now suggest emojis to be added when typing on the physical or on-screen keyboard, in select context, such as messaging applications.

Accomplish your tasks faster with Personal Information Suggestions
Chrome OS now helps you type faster with suggestions for name, email, address and phone number. For example, "my address is" will provide you with a suggestion for your address.

Release notes are now in the Explore app
Now release notes will be integrated into the Explore app in the ‘What’s new’ tab. The overview tab will show the ‘What’s new’ banner when there is a new update and features we want to promote.

As always, please share any feedback you have by using the instructions here, and if you encounter any bugs or issues, please feel free to create a new thread on this forum!

Friendly Reminder: This update will be progressively rolling out over the coming days. Your device may not immediately be eligible for this update.

Best,
Rebecca on behalf of the Chrome OS team
