Went to a website about Georgia death certificates.  Got out when I saw yellow warning triangle.  Later, went to gmail.  Hacker got my gmail account info via my Chromebook (screen wanted my full info and a telephone number provided my g-code message). Router not hacked (17 unique characters, no words).  Thinking of Powerwash.  Your thoughts?

Hello there Paul,

Welcome to the Chromebook Help Community.

Your Chromebook cannot get hacked. Read here on Chromebook security.

You may have a malicious extension which can be disabled by doing a browser reset.

If you believe your Google Account was hacked, change your password immediately. Note: if you used the same Gmail account that you are changing your password with on your Chromebook, you may be prompted to type in your old password on the Chromebook first to then use the new password.

Hope this helps!

That's simply not true that it "cannot be hacked". Anything can, has been, and will continue to be hacked. However, my advice is sort of similar.

First step definitely change your Gmail password from a clean device.

Then clear out all your browser extensions and delete them from your account on Chrome Web Store (so they dont reinstall with the same data still in them)  uncheck extensions from Syncing in your  chromebook's settings, then reboot. (If you already have syncing extensions off you can probably skip this, especially if you end up Powerwashing)

If you want to be sure and dont mind a little extra time for a more certain fix, powerwashing would work. Simply powerwashing isnt a substitute for the other two steps, do those first.

If extra paranoid, make a Recovery USB on a clean computer and do a Recovery. Instructions here:

Still change your password and make sure old extensions or sketchy files wont just sync over.

While my answer is essentially the same, mine comes with the warning to never grow a false sense of a security that something cant be hacked. There is no unhackable computers, no matter what any advertisements tell you; only ones easier to hack, and one's harder to hack. But remember, the user is almost always the weakest link in the security chain. Almost.

Check an unknown URL at https://virustotal.com before clicking if youre unsure. It's run by Google partnering with antivirus companies to do scans of websites and downloadable or already downloaded files, where you can learn its serving IP address and webhost, reputation if its been scanned before, and what other domains that ip address has served before.

Good luck
