Chromebook randomly crashes/restarts 0 Recommended Answers 22 Replies 784 Upvotes

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is a common beta problem, or just an "old chromebook" issue, but this happened to my last chromebook as well (First chromebook was an Acer C720, current computer is Acer R11). I've had this computer for just about 2 years, and at around the same timeframe my other computer started doing the same thing: for no reason whatsoever it'll randomly crash, sometimes it'll freeze for a second or two prior or sometimes there's not warning. The screen goes dark, then the startup screen shows up (white screen, Chrome logo), and then I login and the browser tells me "...closed unexpectedly..." and asks me to restore pages or open startup pages.

When my other computer started doing this I tried hardware reset as well as a powerwash, but that only stopped the problem for a short period (a week or two). Any idea as to what may cause this? Any possible solutions?

On a side note: is it pure coincidence that they both started acting up at around the 2-year mark or have other people seen similar trends?

Thanks,
A Chromebook User

Hi Alejandro,

The two-year coincidence is probably indicating hardware beginning to wear out, perhaps.

However, do you regularly shut your Chromebook down or wait until it crashes?  Is a Hardware Reset / Powerwash helping with the new machine?

I have a similar issue, it only occurred with the update to 74 on the Beta channel, I am unable to determine if it is related to Google Play, (if you have Android installed and have this issue, please do say so).

My chromebook is 3-4 years old, it's probably not hardware related. Honestly this is quite performance impacting, sometimes it takes several hours to crash, sometimes a mere 10-15 minutes, I'm gonna submit this to crbug.

very recently, on the latest build at 4/7/19, my two Asus Chromebox 3s began to crash. I thought it was hardware on one, then the other did the samething. Now I am thinking it is software.

I do turn off my computer regularly, though sometimes I'll leave it on for a few days when I'm doing research or such. Regardless, sometimes it'll crash within minutes of turning it on. I do have Google Play on, but I've had it pretty much since I got my computer (or when they added it to my computer).

Hi Alejandro,

Please try these until one works:
  • Unplug from mains power and perform a Hardware Reset
  • Settings > Advanced > Restore settings to their original defaults in case an extension is interfering
  • Powerwash in case your profile has become corrupted
  • Recovery to ensure your OS is pristine
If none of these help, you will need to contact your place of purchase to discuss your warranty or repair options.

does hardware reset or recovery destroy files, documents, photos, memory?

I did suspect that memory outage might be the reason for this constant crashing, as I've noticed it happens most frequently when I open my class notes, I take notes on Google docs and those files are 20-30+ pages. These frequently cause crashing, and this one day it was so bad as soon as I opened it the computer would crash. After trying it for a third time I decided to use Guest mode and see if it would do it again. It did not. I did remove some unnecessary extensions and it seemed to decrease the frequency of the crashes, but I also have a lot of junk files on my Downloads, which probably also contribute to the crashing. I'm going to try these simpler steps and look for improvement, otherwise I'll probably start clearing some of the other information y'all mentioned (cache, history, etc.).

My chromebook also keeps crashing and rebooting since I changed my channel to Beta on ChromeOS 74. It happens when I have several tabs/apps open or try memory-consuming operations in Crostini, or heavy use of I/O (such as backing up crostini container)...
I also suspect memory related issue, hope it will be fixed soon.

I just saw your recent note alejandro- I think if you clear the cache only ASAP you will enjoy a significant improvement in the freeze issue. It will only delete unnecessary misc unused files etc that are literally there to dump as is. If you have not done this before, it will help a ton. I've managed to keep mine from freezing but once every several weeks just doing this after it does happen, or anytime I notice an undesired lag. FYI, truly, Dont worry about all the other options on there when u clear the cache. Just check clear cache, and make sure in the upper section, you are clearing back to the beginning of time on that device. It doesn't always default to that. DO THAT. Otherwise, its set to like the last week only or something and that won't so much help. Good luck!

I have the same problem with mine as well. I got it brand new Oct. 30th, 2018.  I had it for 2 weeks when it started doing it. Constantly freezes. All the time. It makes me so angry. I have to reset it every time by holding the power button down. I never leave it on all night.  $300 for a computer that crashes all the time. At least 5 times if not more a day. But it is the only one I have.
