Endless loop of "Sign-in error" on Chromebook
1
I change my Google password and activated 2fa last night because I was told a hacker from Vietnam was trying to access my account. All's well on my phone where I now have 2fa on, but my Chromebook is refusing to take the change. When I switch it on it will prompt me to login again and then confirm the login with 2fa, but then when I get into the Chromebook it tells me "Sign-in error, Chrome OS could not sync your data because your account sign-in details are out of date." This loops every time I turn the Chromebook on, and makes my Google drive pretty much inaccessible. It tells me to sign out when the message appears, but doing so does not actually help. Sometimes when I swipe away that notification another one appears asking me to to confirm my new account details but it doesn't help either. I have a feeling all of this is caused by the new password, and I simply can't find a way around it. Could changing my password really do this much damage? I legitimately can't get into my Google drive from my Chromebook. It's getting kinda ridiculous.

Moving you to Chromebook forum.

Please use  https://support.google.com/chromebook/thread/new?hl=en if, in future, another problem arises with the Chromebook.

The Chromebook people may ask you for the Chromebook name and model number, and Chrome version details (if you have access to these).

How are you connected to the internet?

You must have a good connection, usually WiFi is best.

Reboot your Chromebook and make sure you are connected to a solid WiFi signal. Test it with Guest mode.

When you try to sign in to your profile, you would use your OLD password one time, and then your new one when prompted.

If that still fails, do a Powerwash and set up your system again.

I can access my account just fine, but when I log in, that error prevents me from accessing my Google drive. I have a very strong Wi-Fi connection, and I have two users on my Chromebook connected to two different Google accounts. The account that I did not change the password of works just fine. I'm afraid to do a power wash as I have lots of stuff in my downloads that I don't want to lose, as well as Android apps. I have already gone through the process of entering my old password. Surely simply changing my password can't prevent syncing?

Can you try connecting to Drive from some other device, using the problematic profile? Try a phone, or some other computer. I would be interested to see if it allows you to connect. I am trying to narrow down the issue to your profile, or your Chromebook.

FYI, doing a Powerwash is a routine troubleshooting/repair step. You should never store files on a Chromebook unless you also store a copy in Drive or an external device like a USB stick or SD card. We are constantly warning users about that. Also, all your apps should reinstall after you do get reconnected to Drive. App data is dependent on how the app developer provided for backups.

Glad to hear that you were able to do that.

While this bug is still getting fixed, avoid using the Files app to upload to Drive. Use the Drive web interface instead.
