Hello Chromebook Community,

You should soon see an update on your device for Chrome OS 79! As part of this new release, here’s a list of new features and changes you’ll notice when you update to this new version of Chrome.

Lock Screen Media
Now you can control your media right from your lock screen. When you’re listening to audio on your Chromebook, you can play, pause, and skip tracks without unlocking. This new feature works with YouTube Music, Spotify, and dozens of other apps.

Mouse Acceleration Control
This feature allows you to have control over mouse acceleration. You can now manually enable or disable mouse acceleration from Settings.

About Chrome OS
Chromebooks, Chromebases, and Chromeboxes automatically manage updates to ensure your device always has the latest software and security features. Your device’s Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date details can now be found in the ‘About Chrome OS’ section in Settings.

As always, please share any feedback you have by using the instructions here, and if you encounter any bugs or issues, please feel free to create a new thread on this forum!

Friendly Reminder: This update will be progressively rolling out over the coming days. Your device may not immediately be eligible for this update.

Best,
Alisha on behalf of the Chrome OS team

I love ChromeOS. It's simple and easy to use. I've got a request, could you let us have widget's on the desktop? I think they could be very useful for many.

Hi Alisha!
I miss Build Date in About Chrome OS / Detailed build information.
Where can I find this information now?

Is it de facto "uname -v"?

Hello,

For build information, open Chrome Browser and type chrome://version. Let me know if you have any questions!

Best,
Alisha

About Chrome OS / Detailed build information = chrome://version but there is no Build Date here.

Build Date was present in About Chrome OS / Detailed build information on the last row till Chrome OS 78, but since Chrome OS 79 Build Date is missing here.

  1. Why you removed Build Date?
  2. Where can user find this information now?

Can we get a way to keep the Chrome address bar visible when we're in tablet mode? I have never liked hiding the address bar just because I have scrolled down slightly.

@Jiřík Sedláček  - What did you previously use build date for?

From this date I got an idea of how long it took for the particular version to reach my Chromebook and when the next version arrives in 6 weeks. Also, it was possible to deduce from this date why perhaps it is not included the very last security patch but from the previous month because it just could not manage and so on.

I do not understand these changes where useful things that have been in place for years have been silently removed. Probably it is related to the division of Settings to Browser settings and Chrome OS settings, now the user is forced to look in two places instead of one, I'm not particularly excited about it. And no one will explain why this happened too.

Now I need to open a shell to know this date (uname -v) plus i need to do a conversion from PST time to CET in my head...

But none of this can irritate me as much as removing chrome://keyboardoverlay/ more than year ago.
I think about it day after day and the smart guy who caused this I would like to meet.
Or Google's inability to make shortcut ctrl+alt+? functional for non-English keyboards on Chromebooks for 10 years!
etc

My touch pad started behaving erratically after the latest OS update.  When scrolling it will (most of the time) cause my screen to be jumpy (it looks like it is shuddering).  If I use my up down arrows my screen does not do this.
