This is a new bug for me and I suspect it might be something to do with a recent Chrome OS update (I'm on 114). I'm going to try downgrading to 113 to see if it makes any difference.

I tried to find the filter changes between versions 113.0.5672.134 / 15393.58.0 and 114.0.5735.119 / 15437.42.0 but couldn't really pin down any one particular reason. With an embedded Chrome browser in chromeOS it's difficult to determine if it was a change to the Chrome browser or a change to chromeOS itself.
I did find one possibly relevant CL filed during this transition but I don't know if it's the culprit, see below:
- printer: update golden files for cups-filters update (4321905) ยท Gerrit Code Review
https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/platform/tast-tests/+/4321905
That CL affected the 'golden' files for many different printer brands including HP & Canon.
I would suggest filing a feedback report and maybe even a crbug for this issue, that way the devs can be made aware of it and hopefully come up with a fix. See below:
You can help by sending in a report when you next encounter the issue by using the key-combo 'alt+shift+i'
Tip: If you don't have a keyboard, hold the Power button for 3 seconds and tap Feedback.
In the "Tell us what's happening" field add any important details, including the steps to follow to reproduce the issue you're experiencing.
If you're filing a feature request please state your reasons why you need/want this feature.
Make sure to check the box that says: "Send system and app information, and metrics'.
You may also want to consider filing a bug or feature request for it via crbug.com or the public issue tracker where you can track its progress and/or discuss it on the chromium-os-discuss forum.

IF it is just SOME pdfs, it could be security added to the pdf before it is sent to you that prevents you from printing it. If it is a PDF, and if it is a filter error, the author may have put Adobe's security enhancements on it to limit printing -- this happened with my Amtrak ticket.

It seems like you've already done a lot to troubleshoot. Here are some quick steps to try:
- Update your Chromebook's software and the HP print app.
- Check document formatting, especially in Word docs.
- Verify printer settings match document settings.
- Ensure the correct printer driver is installed.
- Print a test page
โ
โto rule out hardware issues.
If the problem persists, reaching out to HP support or their online community forums might provide more tailored solutions.
