Printer - Filter Failed

I am on day 4 of having this problem.  Printer will print some things not others. I have been back to HP and there is no problem with the printer. I have downloaded and connected HP print for Chromebook app.  This results in blank pages being printed. The problem is with Word docs more than anything even when converted to chromedocs.  Press print - get error message as attached.

Anyone any ideas please???????

When you print, if it's a PDF, you have the option of selecting the "Print as Image" option under the 'more settings' section. I have found that this results in PDFs printing as expected.
This is a new bug for me and I suspect it might be something to do with a recent Chrome OS update (I'm on 114). I'm going to try downgrading to 113 to see if it makes any difference.

I'm not sure if the Envy 6452e is fully supported by ChromeOS, based on this compatibility list:  https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index.  It says that the Envy 6000 series is supported, but considering they have specific model numbers for other lines, it makes me wonder how compatible the 6452 is.  Have you reached out to HP Support to see if they can confirm the compatibility?

I'm having the same error message too but I've  got a Canon MG5750. This started to happen at the end of June this yr 2023. Can't print any documents from my chromebook now, I have to do it from my iphone, it's so annoying, so same as you if anyone has any advice it would be appreciated. I'm not very good at tech though !!  Thanks

So grateful for the "Print as Image" solution. My version of ChromeOS is 116 and the problem still exists for HP Envy 4520, and is solved by selecting"Print as Image".

SRogers,

This forum is for Chromebooks.

All,

I tried to find the filter changes between versions 113.0.5672.134 / 15393.58.0 and 114.0.5735.119 / 15437.42.0 but couldn't really pin down any one particular reason. With an embedded Chrome browser in chromeOS it's difficult to determine if it was a change to the Chrome browser or a change to chromeOS itself.

I did find one possibly relevant CL filed during this transition but I don't know if it's the culprit, see below:

That CL affected the 'golden' files for many different printer brands including HP & Canon.

I would suggest filing a feedback report and maybe even a crbug for this issue, that way the devs can be made aware of it and hopefully come up with a fix. See below:

You can help by sending in a report when you next encounter the issue by using the key-combo 'alt+shift+i'
Tip: If you don't have a keyboard, hold the Power button for 3 seconds and tap Feedback.
In the "Tell us what's happening" field add any important details, including the steps to follow to reproduce the issue you're experiencing.
If you're filing a feature request please state your reasons why you need/want this feature.
Make sure to check the box that says: "Send system and app information, and metrics'.

You may also want to consider filing a bug or feature request for it via crbug.com or the public issue tracker where you can track its progress and/or discuss it on the chromium-os-discuss forum.

I had the same problem.  I tried many potential solutions, and nothing worked.

IF it is just SOME pdfs, it could be security added to the pdf before it is sent to you that prevents you from printing it.  If it is a PDF, and if it is a filter error, the author may have put Adobe's security enhancements on it to limit printing -- this happened with my Amtrak ticket.

Are you saying that you're having the same problem with that printer?

This solved a very frustrating problem. Not clear why this is still a bug 7 months later but happy I found this fix

yes.  My printer printed one page (actually the second page as I was printing double-sided) and then gave me a filter error and would not print more.  I tried several things (rebooting, new cartridges, etc and -gasp- even looked at the manual) and what I found out it really was was a security measure on the PDF itself -- a software issue.  Amtrak put some restriction on it so you could only print it once, and it gave a printer filter error on the second+ copy.  This can happen on any pdf if the creator wants to stop you from printing that pdf.  It doesn't give a logical reason (like "unauthorized copy; print aborted") but instead says you have a printer filter error.  I have been printing fine ever since.  And if you want a work-around, convert the pdf into a picture (eg., jpg) and it will have no printing restriction on it and you can make as many copies as your heart desires.  This may not be the issue with every filter failure, BUT, if your printer has been working, and if it is a PDF, and if it is something like a ticket or parking pass, it could be the issue.  Before dicking about with trying to find where the printer filters are and how to clean them, make sure you cannot print anything, especially pictures or a text file you created. Just my experience for what it's worth.

It seems like you've already done a lot to troubleshoot. Here are some quick steps to try:
  1. Update your Chromebook's software and the HP print app.
  2. Check document formatting, especially in Word docs.
  3. Verify printer settings match document settings.
  4. Ensure the correct printer driver is installed.
  5. Print a test pageโ€‹โ€‹ to rule out hardware issues.
If the problem persists, reaching out to HP support or their online community forums might provide more tailored solutions.
