I'm shocked that this feature is not a factory installed basic. Televisions have had sleep timers even before the internet! It's a very useful tool even if it's archaic by today's technology standards. There will always be a need for sleep timers for as long as human beings need to sleep!! I listen to sleep meditations, music and sleep video imagery online as a way to overcome chronic insomnia. I cannot make myself stay awake just to shut down my Chromebook when the session is over. Kind of defeats the purpose of trying to fall asleep!!  Some sites do not have an option to turn off autoplay either. So I need a go-around to shut down my Chromebook when I cannot physically press the key myself. I do not intend to be using hours of unnecessary internet data, electricity or battery power, or leave myself open to online security threats by leaving my Chromebook open when I am not tending to it. I need it to completely shut down (not sleep so someone else can wake it up) after a predetermined time limit that I set myself each time I need it. Just like televisions. Bad on Google for developing such a great product in Chromebook but forgetting the basic stuff that should never be missing from any electronic or powered device.

Hi Sam,

This is a user community forum and we do not have control or say in what feature Google adds to Chrome OS. I recommend submitting as Mike suggested

Yes Google! Please give us a sleep timer for shutdown!  I like to watch movies and go to sleep. Usually I just need about 30 min.   PLEASE ad a sleep timer.

There is a way which works with my TVs:

Cast your media to a TV which has a sleep time using Chromecast.

Turn off the sound on your Chromebook (actually the sound will come from the TV when the TV is playing) and turn down the screen brightness to nothing if you want the Chromebook open. Or simply just close the Chromebook and it will still cast to the TV.

Set your timer on the TV. When the TV turns off, the Chromebook will just sit there with no sound and no screen if you have it opened--eventually the Chromebook will shut itself down to sleep mode.

If you have the Chromebook closed, it will just be in sleep mode when cast is ended when the TV is disconnected by the sleep timer.

You really do not need the Chromebook in the same room as the TV as the the cast will work with any TV on your network that has a Chromecast device attached

You do not necessarily have to have the Chromebook completely shutdown. It can stay in sleep mode through the night. When you get up, shut the Chromebook down and restart. There is no security issue with the Chromebook in sleep mode.

You can also cast from a phone, a tablet or any other computer and do the same timer shutdown.

If you want to only listen to audio then the TV can be set to only play audio on the internal speakers or attached speakers. You can also just turn off the screen on many TVs with only audio.

Just a thought: if you TV does not have a sleep time, then just attach the power cord to a simple timer. When the power is cutoff from the TV, then the cast will end. The Chromebook will just go to sleep as I illustrated.

A Chromecast is the most useful inexpensive computer device I have ever purchased--it works great! You then will have the advantage of watching your movie on a larger screen or listening to audio through the TV speakers/attached speakers which are better than on a Chromebook.

You can also do all that I said by using a HDMI cable to a TV with sleep timer or even a monitor with a timer attached to the power cable--but a Chromecast is much more versatile device.

On the chrome you can add a tab timer extension which you can set what Time the tab with close and if you have no other tabs open then after the default 6 min of being inactive your chrome book will sleep on it’s own hope this helps but I do still think a actual sleep timer would be super helpful especially for people like me where I don’t have a tv in my room but still like to watch tv on my chrome book while going to sleep but don’t want it going down all night
