I have a Asus C423N Chromebook. The OS got wiped during an update.

I have found the recovery file. Downloaded it on a USB stick (not SanDisk). I plugged it into the chrome book, it verified the file, then proceeded to presumably recover the unit. It marks it as complete, then asks me to remove the stick and the chrome book will boot up as normal. Once i remove it, the unit turns off, the screen goes black, then starts to turn on ( still black but you can tell its on.. like a dark greyish type screen) Then it goes black again. I've waited up to 30 mins to see if the unit is going through a longer boot process but it never turns back on. If you press the power button, it will either go to the "insert recovery media stick" screen, or it will turn on to the greyish screen again, then go black. open the next press of power button, it will power up to the insert USB screen.

The unit is fairly new, I purchased it in the spring. So it is under some type of warranty i'm sure, so I don't want to crack it open. Wanted to see if anyone here may know something.

Thanks!

The serial number is NOT part of the Recovery process.

Power down the Chromebook completely (don;t just close the lid!). Remove the USB stick.

Then do a Hardware reset as follows:

First turn off your Chromebook completely (don't just close the lid).
Next, hold down the Refresh  key and then press and hold the Power button. Hold both down for 10 seconds.
Release the Refresh key and then the Power button and your Chromebook will restart. If it doesn't start, press Power again.

When it boots up, you should see the "ChromeOS damaged..." screen. Then insert the Recovery USB as directed.

I've tried all this. I did not type it in the original post as I didn't think it was necessary.  And yes, I power it off, not just close the lid.

Thank you for the reply though, it is appreciated.

I have contacted Asus, It is in fact under warranty, I think I am just going to return it.
