Are you attempting this on the web [mail.google.com]? Or on the Android app?
[Logout via the web works fine for me.]

SAME PROBLEM I'm observing for past couple of days on chromebook - REGRESSION issue !!!

sign-out option [ top right corner is not allowing me to SIGN-OUT of GMAIL !!!
when click it, I'm redirected to;
=========================
Google Accounts
Manage your signed-in Google accounts. Websites, apps and extensions in Chrome and Google Play may use these accounts to customise your experience, depending on permissions. Learn more
Accounts
fresh clean
xxxx@gmail.com Primary account [ = ch/book owner account ]
=========================

as SIGN-OUT option [ top right corner ] say, it is not to;
Manage your signed-in Google accounts, but to SIGN-OUT from GMAIL email access !!!

as I do see, chromeOS is not providing GMAIL READ / write ONLY options ANY-MORE - why not ?

I do prefer [ SECURITY ] to sign-out first from GMAIL application before going to YOUTUBE for example !!!

I do not need [ after completing my daily session in GMAIL ] to keep it open FOREVER to any HACKERS to read / interfere with my emails !!!

when I will need to READ email again, I will LOG-IN again to GMAIL in secure way on my chromebook [ 2FA including every time when log-in is attempted !!! ], now chromeOS is not using / not asking for 2FA when accessing GMAIL on my chromebook !!!

currently introduced changes are NEGATING all what was good & secure in chromeOS before,

now my PRIME [ OWNER ] gmail account stay OPEN all time & chromeOS is not asking for my 2FA options before allowing me to log-in !!!

these introduced changes are COMPLETELY wrong & allow not SECURE access [ no need to use 2FA to get access ] !!!
WTF is going on in chromeOS & google STABLE ?
this is SERIOUS SECURITY regression - very bad !!!

James, I appreciate the effort here, however it still doesn't solve the issue. The option to 'sign out' of Gmail has been removed in the last few days. Once we log into our Chromebooks, we are essentially 'locked in.' Therein lies the frustration.

I changed search engine to duckduckgo and have lost the ability now to sign out of  gmail. Click on my profile pic and only says manage accounts. I seriously doubt there is a computer sold in a store that a manufacturer or government can't get access to, but it's annoying not to be able to log out of gmail. I think Google wants to circumvent duckduckgo thru gmail and then sell your searching info to companies.

Been directed here to complain no log out anymore on gmail within Chromebook. My book is used by multiple people I wish to keep my gmail private. Please restore to letting us log out. Its ridiculous, if book was stolen they have access to my email. Can log on to things by requesting lost passwords etc. This option to remove sign out is stupid at least.

As James said, You can sign out of accounts by going into settings > people > google accounts and clicking the three dot menu icon, then "remove this account" next to the account you want to sign out on. You can't sign out of the initial account, but you can sign out of other signed accounts in this manner.

Please read before complaining. it is possible to sign out.

I am not happy that the possibility exist even MORE for hackers to view my gmail!   It appears that  you have put  our security at  risk by not being able to sign out of gmail.  Please fix this problem and if not then I, as many others will drop Google gmail and use another.

Labartha C. That is really not a valid concern. The new system actually makes you more secure.

We are seeing many comments from users who seem to be treating a Chromebook like a Windows computer. The old need to sign out of Gmail while you are logged onto a Windows computer simply does not exist on a Chromebook.

Your Chromebook profile is secure and hacker proof. Everything you do is sandboxed and isolated.

I run multiple accounts on my chromebook and now cannot get into any of them through the "manage accounts" i've tried but it just cycles. I have been starting at the cycling circle go round and round and you cannot move it to background running for 25 mins now. Hoping for an update so i can get into my other accounts - what a b.s. move.

Why would I want to remove my account. I wish to keep my account, I wish to still use my Chromebook, so don't want to log out of that either. I just want to log out of my gmail account so that I can pass my computer to be used by other people without having to make guests to use my computer. I simply want to sign out of my gmail, is that too much to ask. The decision to change this was silly at least. People like to log out of things but carry on using a computer.

You should never allow anyone else to use your Chromebook while it is logged into your profile. That is a serious security and privacy exposure, along with opening the possibility that the other user could accidentally delete or change your data.

Chromebooks are designed to be used by multiple people - just sign out of your profile and allow the other user to set up a profile of their own, using their email account.

Signing out of Gmail while still signed into your profile does not accomplish anything from a security standpoint. You are still logged in.

If you are sharing a Chromebook with multiple trusted family members, you can easily set up multiple profiles. While logged into your profile, you can use the new feature to switch to those profiles without manually signing out of anything. I do not recommend that approach, but it is very similar to what you were previously doing.

I am and have been having the same problem as all these other people with the same change not being able to sign out of gmail on my chromebook with the sign out button having been removed.  I also have not been able to find any way to get around it.  I also very much wish they would change it back to how it was and think that it was a very bad change.

EVERYONE having the issue needs to go to this link and STAR the issue so that it will be addressed. The EXPERTS here just say things like "that doesn't happen to me" or just log in as a guest Which are not acceptable. I have come to realize these experts are people who spend a lot of time making comments because they have nothing better to do NOT people who really have a clue. PLEASE DO NOT just go  and say "me too" ! You need to add a star to indicate the issue and when there is enough feedback they will address it.

I agree with all the complaints about the  "elimination of the Sign-out feature" PROBLEM but how are we as a group supposed to influence chromebook to roll-back this change and restore a sign-out option.Are there any humans at chrome even listening.Seems as though we're all talking to each other but nothing is being done. I DO NOT LIKE having  to sign-out or shut down my computer every time I walk away from it.Without a sign-out, my personal email can be viewed and my google account info or settings can be altered.I'm almost ready to chuck my chromebook out my window shouting  "I'M MAD AS HELL and "I'M NOT GONNA  TAKE IT ANYMORE ".One more thing- Who the hell were they listening to before  they made the change ? If they don't roll it back,I suspect many people may ,like me, may be looking for an "OPTION"  other than chromebook JUST maybe THEIR BOTTOM LINE WILL TALK TO THEM .

My whole point is I do not want to set up new profiles. If I am out and about and I am logged in doing stuff and it is stolen people have access to my email. They can log on to anything and say forgot password, they already know my gmail its open to view. They then in turn get into everything they can. This is a security issue, my friends, my family are not.

I want to log out of gmail.  Like I always have been able to.  I don't need extra screen "locks".
I like gmail, but if this is not fixed I'll have to move to another email provider and keep the gmail linked to chrome as a junk box.

@Dymphe Why not a lock on close option. This would be preferable. I have switched my search to caps lock so i have to go the route of click at the bottom and then the lock, would much rather a setting where i select lock on close, then i close the lid and go, no worrying about forgetting to lock.
