How can I switch back to Chrome OS Canary? (Currently boot loops)
1
Hello there,

I have been on Chrome OS Canary since May & absolutely love it on my Asus C101PA.

However recently after a system update, I was prevented from logging in.
I would type in my password, the screen goes blank a few seconds, then loops back to the login screen.

If I do this enough times, I get a red warning triangle by my user ID.

But this is the Canary channel, so this should be expected & fair enough.
I got around this by moving to the Dev channel.

Well that stopped working for me last week because the Dev channel also starting boot looping on me in the same manner as Canary did after it too got an update.

Now I am on the Beta channel which is still working as I type.

For some more info, if I reset my Chromebook while it's on Canary - I am able to login & set it up.
It is only after I log out, I can no longer log back in. If I try to update to Canary from any other channel, I am not allowed even a first login.

I've tried resetting my flags to see if that would help but have been unsuccessful.

I am able to login under a guest account to both Dev & Canary channels. Does that mean it's an issue with my Google account specifically?

I have been keeping an eye on the Chromebook Reddit forum, as well around here to see if there has been any update for this issue. I'll see the odd post regarding the boot loop, but no solutions provided other than to power wash back to another channel.

Every couple of days or so I try to see if one of the Canary updates has solved the boot loop, but so far I've had no luck & just end up switching back after submitting a bug report.

Is there anything that can be done to solve this? Is there a fix pending with an update to the Dev/Canary channels down the road I just need to be patient & wait for? I think it's coming up to a month now since Canary stopped working for me.

Could it possibly be my Google/Gmail account where I need to change a setting there?

Thanks for your help,

Eddie

Howdy do

Sadly, once you leave the secure OS environment of Stable, Beta, Dev CHANNELS, you are largely on your own.  Dev and Canary are the world of YMMV, and [also sadly], if you break it, you bought it.

Thank you for the reply!

Alright, I can understand how there's nothing that can be done about the Canary channel.

How about Dev? Because the problems that I was running into in Canary have also started in Dev.

Because this has happened to a few other people, does anyone know if there is a pending fix or am I essentially barred from using Dev/Canary from here on?

Since you can use Guest mode, the issue is in your user profile. Most likely an extension.

You will have to figure out what is causing the problem in the experimental channels - delete or disable all your extensions while you are in Beta, and then see if you can use your cleaned up profile in dev/canary. Then you can figure out what is actually causing the issue.

I'm pretty sure that Russell is not on the Canary channel but Dev Google Chrome 79.0.3931.2 (Platform 12576.0.0-19.10.08) like he said.
