MG6821 Printer not connecting
1
I have a canon MG6821 and when I try to add the printer to my chromebook it says it opens to a window where I have to select the manufacturer, model, etc. However, the MG 6821 models is not listed within the drop down. When I try to select another similar model it won't print. I even tried to install the canon app and it keeps crashing.

You don't need to manually add any Canon printer in the Canon Pixma MG6800 series (e.g. the MG6821) as these are supported via "driverless printing" and are therefore detected automatically by Chrome OS CUPS. The evidence for this can be found in the "Check that your printer is compatible" section of Google's Setup your printer advice. As long as your printer is connected to your home network, then all you should need to do when it comes to printing is to follow the advice given in sections 1 and 2. If you have any trouble, just post back with a brief description and I reckon that there is a good chance that we will be able to sort out your problem together. If you only have a Chromebook available, then your biggest challenge will probably be getting your printer connected to your home network. However you can solve that particular problem by temporarily employing Android, iOS, Windows or Mac OS software. For example you may well be able to install the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY Android app for that purpose on your Chromebook as long as you aren't running low on unused disk space (easy to do with a 16GB drive).

Canon has been the source of constant issues with their printers. Most of us have completely given up on them and found that troubleshooting them was almost impossible.

You should contact the Canon support team directly to see if they have a solution.

The main issue is that most Canon models, such as yours, do not include internal capability to interpret standard printer languages such as HP's PCL, Epson's ESC/P, or Postscript. Many of their printers require that the host computer (usually Windows or Mac) compose the image and send it to the printer as a graphics bitmap.

Some users have reported that they can install the Canon app on their phone, and then the printer works on their Chromebook. Details were not provided by those users, so you will have to experiment, or contact Canon for assistance.

A bit more info for you:
  1. In fact it is almost impossible to manually add any driverless printing technology printer (see this related post for more info) because the only printers that are listed in the Chrome OS internally held database of supported printers are supported by the original CUPS system which require ppd files to supply information about supported printer features. Strictly speaking, the newer, so-called “driverless printing” class of printers still do employ printer drivers, but these have now been embedded within the Linux kernel and ppd files are not used. This explains why you cannot find any “driverless printing” technology printers listed in the Chrome OS CUPS list of supported printers.
  2. The "Canon Pixma MG6821 Wireless Guidance" section in this Canon guide suggests that you can connect your printer to your home network quite easily from its built-in control panel. Even if it isn’t the first time you have powered your MG6821 on, you should still be able to navigate your way through the menu system until you find the wireless LAN connection option mentioned in the guide.
