Why does my chromebook screen keep glitching and/or going black?

My chromebook screen keeps glitching, usually on a "new tab" but also on other sites too. It either goes black but doesn't turn off, or makes weird colorful flashing lines- it's a little hard to explain. It doesn't show up on recording or screenshots. Usually I just need to shake my chromebook a bit or tilt the screen, but other times I have to restart my chromebook.

If it doesn't show up in recordings or screenshots it's almost certainly hardware.
Adjust your screen, if it happens when you move the screen then it is the cord connecting the screen to the main board most likely.

Sapphire 3763,

Which version of Chrome OS are you on, and which channel are you on? You can find this information out by going to:

  • Click on the lower right-hand corner of your screen and choose the Settings gear icon
  • Choose "About Chrome OS" on the bottom of the left-hand side of the window
  • Then look for the Version number with anything it says after this number
I am on the beta channel and had this happen to me this morning on mine, but haven't spent time to work through a fix yet. One thing to try is to check all of your flags that you have turned on by going to your browser and typing in chrome://flags then make sure that the flags that aren't working or that you no longer need or are not using are turned off.

Also, I wouldn't suggest shaking your Chromebook. When this happened to me, I refreshed the webpage and it worked fine after that.

I agree with Brandon, this is almost certainly a hardware/screen connection issue. If you are lucky it is just a loose connection rather than a broken wire.
