Turns on screen stays blank

If you are reporting an issue or looking for troubleshooting help, please provide the following information and a detailed description of your issue:

Chrome OS Version (Type chrome://version in your address bar. Copy and paste the first two lines you see here.): Not sure on OS version as the screen wont turn on haven't tried connecting an external display yet.

Chromebook Model (Example: Chromebook Pixel, HP Chromebook 11, etc.):
It's a Samsung Chromebook XE303C12-A01CA

Issue description: I was using my chromebook on facebook and everything was fine but it started lagging up on me so I closed everything down and shut it down but when I tried to turn it back on the light on the power button comes on and the screen stays blank, I can boot it to the recovery screen that says "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" I've made a recovery SD card with two different cards and neither one works just says "An unexpected error has occurred." and I have tried multiple times with each card after formatting and re-making them into recovery cards, and no I don't have a USB drive to use

Ryan Dunlop-

Here is a trick you can use:  You can put the Chromebook into Developer Mode, then once it is in Developer Mode you can switch it back into normal mode and it should totally wipe the Chromebook without requiring any USB flash drive or any SD flash card etc.

But remember that just like a Powerwash or a USB ChromeOS restore, this process will wipe all local files you have stored on your Chromebook's SSD.

best of luck !  And be certain to return to let us know if this helped.

PS:  Remember that when using a Chromebook you should never store important files locally on the SSD HardDiskDrive shelf;  Instead, store them in your Google Drive or if you must store them locally use something like flash storage media.  A Powerwash or a switching into Developer Mode will wipe all SSD local files.

for Samsung Chromebook XE303C12-A01

  1. Press ESC + Samsung Chromebook Refresh key + POWER. The screen displays a yellow exclamation point (!).

  2. Press CTRL + D to begin dev mode, then ENTER. The screen displays a red exclamation point.

  3. Press CTRL + D, then ENTER. The Chromebook deletes its local data, returning to its initial state. The deletion takes approximately 15 minutes.

  4. When the transaction completes, press the spacebar, then press ENTER to return to verified mode.

Ryan, I'm sorry to hear that you are having this difficulty.  I think it's time to have you Contact a Chrome Ninja for assistance, in view of what you have reported.

Please come back and let us know the results.

Ryan Dunlop-

It has been some time since you posted.  Hopefully you have had a chance to contact a ninja as Lynn has suggested.  Even better - hopefully you are back at 100% joy.

but if not  .  .  .

One additional thing which might be helpful in your quest - could you try to turn-ON your XE303C12 while it is NOT plugged-in to your power adapter (and also with it being plugged-in)?   If the Chromebook starts up OK with the adapter NOT plugged in then it might make your working with your Chromebook a whole lot easier than trying to read the screen when there is no backlight.

If you do get a backlight working for more than an instant, please submit an issue report.  To do that, you simply press three keys at the same time and then write a little bit of text (some text  - like, maybe - my backlight is not working when i   yada yada yada)
To report an issue,  press (all three keys)  ctrl + alt + i (and that is "eye")

And remember, when all else fails, it is OK to turn OFF your Chromebook by holding down the power button for about 20seconds while watching till that white LED on the power button goes totally off.  (Actually i think it is 8 seconds by clock-time but it feels like longer to some impatient ppl like me.)

Let us know, please

I had the same problem..with the same device

I think i solved the problem of the ''unexpected error''

First SanDisk doesn't work with the chrome's recovery program..
So I tried with Kingston and Lexar...in my case..Lexar it's the only working one.
Chrome support suggest you to use 4G USB minimum...in fact.. my kingston USB has 4G anf my Lexar 32G...so just try bigger USB and i't will work.

No matter what reset I do, the screen continues to remain blank.

Any help would be appreciated.

Please refrain from posting the same question in multiple topics.

You need to contact Samsung support to get a repair set up. You can do so at this page: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/contact

They have options for chat, email, and phone support.
