IMAP & Chrome Book

I have a friend that just purchased a Chromebook.  She was using Outlook Express for her @myfairpoint.net (IMAP) email account.  The new version of Outlook doesn't seem compatable with IMAP anymore. She doesn't want to have a different e-mail address.  What are your recommendations?

Chromebooks are internet-based devices designed to run Chrome apps and extensions while connected online.

You can look for apps/extensions from the Chrome Webstore for any that can check IMAP email:

In future, Chromebook related questions are better posted at Chromebook Central forum:

Perhaps make use of their webmail system?

As far as I can see, fairpoint email supports POP3.

As an alternative to Matt's suggestion you can do this:

You can easily set up Gmail to send and retrieve email from another account using POP3.

In you Gmail app click on the gear icon, then settings.

Click on the Accounts tab on the next page and then "add a POP3 mail account that you own".

You will then be able to both send and receive from you old account.

If you want instant notification of new emails you could always forward them to your gmail account to save waiting for the POP protocol.

Full instructions here.

You can set Gmail to send your email from the old address in the same tab.

Instructions here.

here's a video that shows how to do what Tony described. http://chromebooks.support/productivity/e-04-gmail-email-client/

unfortunately this does not support IMAP either, only POP3. But it's a decent solution for checking multiple email accounts by only logging into one "master" account.

one more option is to use the app CloudMagic email client which can connect to IMAP accounts. It's one of the few Android apps which will work on ChromeOS.

How about we not pile on until the OP returns; if ever?

As noted in another post, Gmail can be configured to work with other email servers and does support IMAP. Also, there is Outlook.com which works very well on my Chromebook and supports IMAP. The good thing about Outlook.com is that if you are familiar with Outlook (desktop PC version) then Outlook.com is an easy thing to get used to.

Nevertheless, a good email client for Chromebooks would be great. My vote would be for the Android client, K-9 mail. I love that application!
