Let sites play enhanced protected movies and music

Important: If you use ChromeOS version 89 or earlier, you may experience playback issues on sites with protected content. To avoid playback issues, update to ChromeOS version 90 or higher

Some sites you visit might offer enhanced protected content, like HD movies or music. This kind of content can play at a higher quality or play offline.

Before you can play this content, your Chromebook will ask you if it can share verification information with the site, including a site-specific device identifier.

On Chromebooks with Intel Gen 11 processors: To confirm your device is eligible for the highest quality protected video and audio content, the site collects device information like make and model with a site-specific identifier. This information allows the site to re-identify your device each time you visit the site.

Allow verification

You'll be asked to pick from the following options:

  • Allow: This lets your Chromebook share data with the website to make sure that your Chromebook can play the content.
  • Block: This stops the site from checking that your Chromebook works with enhanced playback. You might be able to play the content, but at lower quality.

NoteVerified Access, which is on by default, is required for enhanced playback.

Block or allow verification on sites

To see the sites where you've allowed the identifier to be shared, or to change whether you allow or block sharing, follow these steps:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Select More  and then Settings.
  3. In the "Privacy and security" section, select Site settings.
  4. Select Protected content.
  5. Turn on Allow identifiers for protected content.
    • To allow or block sharing with a specific site, add it to the "Allow" or "Block" list.
    • To remove an exception, select More  and then Remove.
