Skype on a Chromebook

Skype is not currently supported on Chromebooks, but there are alternatives to make phone calls, instant message, or video chat.

Make phone calls

You can make phone calls with Hangouts, a free app that comes with your Chromebook. Calls to the US and Canada are free--you can call multiple numbers at once, and even combine phone calls with multi-way video chat to get everyone on the line at once.

To make a phone call:

  1. Press the search key .
  2. Select Hangouts call .
  3. Select "+Add Telephone" and enter the phone number.
  4. Click the green Call button to be connected.

Send an instant message

There are many free instant messaging apps that are compatible with your Skype contacts, as well as your contacts with Google, Yahoo, AIM, MSN, and other popular messaging programs. Examples include imo, IM+, and eBuddy. You can add these apps for free from the Chrome Web Store.

Video chat with friends and family

You can video chat with up to 9 people with Hangouts, a free app that comes with your Chromebook.

To use video chat:

  1. Press the search key .
  2. Select Hangouts call .
  3. Enter the email addresses of your favorite contacts under "Add people to this video call."
  4. Click the blue Submit button to begin your chat.
