Lock your screen

If you step away from your Chromebook, we recommend locking your screen for extra security.

Lock your screen

  1. Sign in to your Chromebook.
  2. Click the status area, where your account picture appears.
  3. Click Lock Lock.
    • Optional: To lock your screen, you can use the shortcut Search + L, or press and hold the power button and let go when the sign-in screen appears.

After you lock your screen, your Chromebook's display will turn off to save power.

  • If your Chromebook is plugged in when you lock it, the display will turn off in 8 minutes (and power off completely in 30 minutes).
  • If it isn't plugged in when you lock it, the display will turn off in 6 minutes (and power off completely in 10 minutes).

Put your Chromebook to sleep

Put your Chromebook to sleep

To put your Chromebook to sleep and save battery power, close the lid.

If you signed out before putting your Chromebook to sleep, it will also automatically turn off.

Wake up from sleep

To wake your Chromebook, open the lid, then press any key or swipe the touchpad. If you're using a Chromebox, move the mouse.

Optional: Ask for a password to wake up

For extra security, you can also require a password to wake from sleep:

  1. Sign in to your Chromebook.
  2. Click the status area, where your account picture appears.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. In the "People" section, check the box next to "Require password to wake from sleep."
  5. Click Done.
