Manage your camera & microphone privacy

You can use privacy controls to manage access to your camera and microphone.

To provide access, you must give permissions to apps, web pages, and the Chromebook itself.

Important: If your Chromebook has a physical camera and/or microphone switch at the top or side of the device, make sure it’s in the “on” position.

Step 1.a: Select your apps (including Android and web apps)

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time and then Settings .
  2. On the left, select Apps and then Manage your apps.
  3. Select an app that you want to give camera or microphone permissions to.
  4. Turn on or turn off the app’s permission to use the camera or microphone.

Step 1.b: Choose your website permissions in Chrome

  1. On your Chromebook, open Chrome.
  2. Go to chrome://settings/privacy.
  3. Select Site settings.
  4. Under “Permissions,” select Camera or Microphone.
  5. Select an option:
    • Sites can ask to use your microphone
    • Don't allow sites to use your microphone

Tip: When a web page or app you’re visiting requires it, Chrome may ask you to grant permission to access the camera or microphone.

Step 2: Turn on or off Chromebook access to mic & camera

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time and then Settings .
  2. On the left, select Security and Privacy and then Privacy controls.
  3. Turn on or off Camera access or Microphone access.
  4. To turn on or off microphone system access from your keyboard, you can press the Microphone key, if present .

Tip: If the camera is unresponsive, you may need to turn it off and on again. You may also need to restart or refresh the app after turning it back on.
