Sync information across Chromebooks

When you sync your apps, extensions, bookmarks, and other information across Chromebooks, you can access them on any Chromebook you use.

What you can sync

  • Apps and extensions from the Chrome Web Store (except extensions containing plug-ins)
  • Chrome browser settings
  • Custom wallpapers
  • Language preferences
  • Prediction of network actions

Set up sync

How you set up sync on your Chromebook depends on whether you’re using a personal Chromebook or a work or school Chromebook and on whether you use extra security on your Google Account.

Sync across personal Chromebooks
  1. Sign in to your Chromebook
  2. In the lower right corner of the screen, click your profile picture.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Under the “Users” section, click Advanced sync settings.
  5. In the "Advanced sync settings" dialog that appears, choose what you want to sync:
    • Sync everything: Select Sync everything from the dropdown menu.
    • Choose specific items to sync: Select Choose what to sync from the dropdown menu. Check the items you want to sync.
  6. Click OK.
Sync across work or school Chromebooks

If you’re using a Chromebook at work or at school, you may need to have your network administrator set up sync for you.

Sync while using 2-step verification
  1. Sign in to your Chromebook.
  2. Open Chrome browser. In the top right corner, click Sign in.
  3. Enter your Google Account password.
  4. When asked to enter an "application-specific password" or an "access code," generate the password on your Authorizing applications and sites page, then paste it into the box.
  5. Select Settings.
  6. Under the “Users” section, click Advanced sync settings.
  7. In the "Advanced sync settings" dialog that appears, choose what you want to sync:
    • Sync everything: Select Sync everything from the dropdown menu.
    • Choose specific items to sync: Select Choose what to sync from the dropdown menu. Check the items you want to sync.
  8. Click OK.

Note: Verification codes won’t work to authorize apps and sites.

Sync while using a custom passphrase
  1. Sign in to your Chromebook.
  2. Enter your passphrase.
  3. In the lower right corner of the screen, click your profile picture.
  4. Select Settings.
  5. Under the “Users” section, click Advanced sync settings.
  6. In the "Advanced sync settings" dialog that appears, choose what you want to sync:
    • Sync everything: Select Sync everything from the dropdown menu.
    • Choose specific items to sync: Select Choose what to sync from the dropdown menu. Check the items you want to sync.
  7. Click OK.

Note: You’ll need to enter the passphrase on each Chromebook you want to sync. If you’ve forgotten your passphrase, go to Google Dashboard and remove sync information from your Google Account, then set up sync again.

Turn off sync

  1. In the lower right corner of the screen, click your account picture.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. In the “Users” section, click Advanced sync settings.
  4. In the dialog that appears, uncheck the items you no longer want to sync.

Delete sync information from your account

You can delete your synced information from your Google Account at any time:

  1. In the lower right corner of the screen, click your account picture.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. In the "Users" section, click Google Dashboard.
  4. In the window that opens, go to the "Chrome sync" section and click Stop sync and delete data from Google.

All the information that has been synced will be deleted from your Google Account. All of your bookmarks, apps, and extensions will stay on your Chromebook, but won’t show up on other Chromebooks you use.
