Use your Chromebook touchpad

You can use your Chromebook's touchpad to move the pointer, right-click items on the screen, and more. Here's how it works:

Move the pointer: Move your finger across the touchpad.

Click: Press the lower half of the touchpad. You can also tap the touchpad to click.

Right-click: Press the touchpad with two fingers, or hold down the Alt key while clicking with one finger.

Scroll: Place two fingers on the touchpad and move them up and down to scroll vertically, or left and right to scroll horizontally.

Swipe: Quickly move two fingers left or right to go backward or forward on web pages or while using apps.

See all open windows: Swipe down with three fingers.

Swipe between tabs: If you have multiple browser tabs open, you can also swipe left and right with three fingers to quickly move between tabs.

Drag and drop: With one finger, click the item you want to move. With a second finger, move the item. Release both fingers to drop the item at its new location.

Change touchpad settings

To set how fast or slow your mouse pointer moves and how your touchpad works:

  1. If you haven't already, sign in to your Chromebook.
  2. Click the status area, where your account picture appears.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. In the "Device" section, adjust the sliders to set your touchpad or mouse speed (how quickly your pointer moves).
  5. Click Touchpad settings (or Touchpad and mouse settings) to:
    • Turn tap-to-click on or off
    • Switch between Australian scrolling and traditional scrolling
    • Swap your primary mouse button
  6. When you're done, click OK.

Fix touchpad problems

If your touchpad stops working, try the following steps. Test after each step to see if the touchpad works.

  • Make sure there is no dust or dirt on the touchpad.
  • Touch the Esc key several times.
  • Drumroll your fingers on the touchpad for ten seconds.
  • Restart your Chromebook.
  • Perform a hard reset.
  • If you have more than one account on your Chromebook, delete the account that causes the touchpad problems, then re-add the account.

If none of these steps work, recover your Chromebook.
