Hello.

Error description:
  • Passwords are not synced with my Google account.

Expected behaviour:
  • All passwords are synced.

Chrome version: 75.0.3770.100 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Operating system: Ubuntu 18.04.2 64 bits (up-to-date)

Additional data:
  • In any other device (computers with Linux or Windows, Android smartphone) passwords are synced.
  • Any other data (bookmarks, etc.) are synced.
  • In chrome://sync-internals/ view I see an error in Passwords row:
Error: MergeDataAndStartSyncing@../../components/password_manager/core/browser/sync/password_syncable_service.cc:190, datatype error was encountered: Failed to get passwords from store.
  • I tried removing my entire profile folder ($HOME/.config/google-chrome/Default) and logging in again with my account with no success.

How do I recover passwords synchronization?

Thank you.

I have experienced this problem on two different Ubuntu 18.04 systems, most recently with Chrome 76.

Error: MergeDataAndStartSyncing@../../components/password_manager/core/browser/sync/password_syncable_service.cc:191, datatype error was encountered: Failed to get passwords from store.

For the first system, I ended up resetting my settings on my device to get things rolling again, losing my browser history and other device-local data. Not a good solution.

Fixed it with
# cd $HOME
# mv .config/chromium .config/chromium-old

Works on Fedora 31, chromium version 78.0.3904.108 (RPM Fusion Build)

The problem was solved by deleting 'Login Data' and 'Login Data-journal' in the profile.

bash$ rm "<profile>/Login Data*"

The <profile> part can be found in the Profile Path on the chrome://version page.
