chrome on android has no back buttons, nor can i close any windows! what happened?

My Android phone (lG v35) did an update, and now chrome is all messed up. There are no back  buttons whatsoever, so i can't go back to the last page. I cannot close a tab unless i click on the tab button to show all open tabs, that is the only way i can close any sites at all. It's killing my battery. Where did the buttons go? Nothing on the help site is tailored for Android; all the "reset settings" links are for desktops. I am about to throw my phone against the wall, please help!

I got the Moto g7 Supra. In all my previous phones I had in the past, going back pages on Chrome was never an issue, till I got this phone. There's no back button on it or anything. I'm tired of having to go through the history page list, just so I can get to where I wanna be, like is there a way that I can completely avoid this problem altogether?

I also have the same problem, no back button on Chrome, when using my new mobile phone.
I have a new Moto G7 Play (Android 9).

The back button does appear OK on my wife's phone which is an old Moto G4 (Android 5.1).
It also appears OK on my laptop.

I've managed to solve the back button problem on my phone (Moto G7 Play).
The problem was that I had initiated "One-button nav" when setting up the phone.
This results in a bar at the bottom of the screen which can be swiped left and right, however, it does not work as well as a back button/arrow.
I managed to switch off the One-button display and return to having three buttons at the bottom of the screen, similar to my previous Moto g4.
One of these is a back button and now woks as it should on Chrome.

If you have one-button nav, swipe the button to the left and hold it for a sec and when you release it a window of your recent pages pops up. Hope it helps!
