I've been trying to fix this problem for the past hour, all to no avail.
For context, my phone is a Nokia 6.1 with Android One and a Zeiss camera.
This afternoon, when I started up chrome, I got the red button with the "Update Chrome: Newer version is available" thing, and clicking on it (as expected) took me to the Play store. That's when the trouble came. I tried clicking on the white UPDATE button to the left of the green OPEN button, all to no avail. I kept clicking on it multiple times hoping it would work, all to the same result - nothing. I tried searching for Chrome to update it, but clicking on the button did nothing there either.
I've tried disabling and then enabling Chrome, as well as restarting my Android, all to no avail. Also, I've tried updating all my apps from the play store, yet for some reason, when I try doing that, the update button remains there for Chrome.
How can I fix this issue, and has anyone else run into a similar problem?
Hey all, thanks for taking the time to help bring this to our attention.
Our team is aware of a recent change in Chrome’s update behavior from Google Play on some newer versions of Android. On affected devices, it is sometimes no longer possible to manually update Chrome by clicking the update button on Chrome’s app page.
If you are opted into automatic updates from Google Play, Chrome will automatically update when your device is next eligible for automatic updates, and you do not need to take further action to update Chrome. In most cases, being connected to a WiFi network and connected to a charger are needed for automatic updates. You can learn how to manage these preferences in our Google Play help center.
If you would like to manually install an available Chrome update, but are affected by this behavior, you can try the following two options:
If you have multiple pending app updates available, you can select “Update All” from the My apps & games page.
Our teams are continuing to investigate and work toward restoring the original update behavior. In the meantime, automatic Chrome updates will still work as expected.

I had the additional problem that Android System Webview also wouldn't update; I thought that might be linked to the failed Chrome update. Here's what I tried: Turn off Bluetooth (apparently this can affect Android System Webview updates) 'Uninstall' Android System Webview (you can't really uninstall it, but back to factory settings) Clear cache & storage from Google Play Restart phone
I don't know if it was the combination that worked, or if it was just the 'clear storage' one as recommended above, but both apps are now updated for me.

I too tried rebooting and disabling to no avail. I cleared the cache and storage in Google Play which still didn't allow me to click on the update button from Google Chrome BUT when I head into "My apps & games" in the play store and see a list of apps pending update (including Chrome) selecting "update all" actually processed the update for Chrome and it's updated now.
So hopefully you have some other apps to update.. if not I'd turn off auto update and wait for there to be another app requiring update and try the update all option.

First clear cache data of google play services. Then open play store and click on update all. All the apps will start updating; now cancel others updates except google chrome after few minutes your google chrome will start updating.

Hey I had the same problem. Seems I was missing a special library for chrome to update. It's called Trichrome Library. For me at least that was the problem. From what I understand it has something to do with chrome taking over the WebView apps job in Android 10.
The library is NOT available in play store so I ended up finding it on a site called apkmirror.
In my case neither the chrome app nor the webview app were able to update through the play store. Not even using any method listed in this article.

This is an old issue and must be fixed by Google. In my case it only happens with Chrome and Android system webview, not with any other app and its frequent and recurrent. Clearing cache or data isn't necessarily helping.

Worked: Cleared enabled play store notifications, Cleared play store cache, installed play services update (previously would not show up on search), then tried updating chrome

I had to clear the Google Play Store's app data and cache then open Chrome back up and click to update from there to get mine updated because after clearing the app data from the Play Store it showed nothing needed updated but I knew that was not correct.

I was having this issue for many months, and none of the suggestions worked in my case. Now, I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or what, but a couple days ago I was suddenly able to update Chrome, and also WebView, which wasn't updating either. Only thing that has changed before this sudden success was that I bought more storage for my google account, which was approaching the limit. So my suggestion based on this is: if nothing else helps, check how full your google account storage is, and maybe deleting the unnecessary files (or buying more space) could help, if you are close to running out of space. How this has anything to do with updating Chrome or WebView, or does it have anything to do with it, I have no idea. Just an observation from my case.

I was facing the same issue, please check if there are multiple apps waiting for update for that go to 'My apps & Games' under playstore and click on update all. There are some other apps on which Chrome is dependent upon once all apps start updating you can manually cancel unwanted apps

I have had this problem several times..previously it updated within days..this time, it's been weeks. I have tried all the fixes suggested here and none have worked. I tried uninstalling (on a Samsung S10), but it only uninstalled several updates and would not even update to where I was previously. This is not a Samsung problem. There are, with no exaggeration, hundreds of users experiencing this, and there does not appear to be any one answer that addresses the issue, and no response help from Google.

Had the same issue on Samsung S20. Clear the data and cache from Play Store as mentioned, also try cleaning cache and history from chrome. Even after I followed these steps, Chrome and Webview refused to update manually, however they updated with 'Update all' option after a second try. Weird, but works.
Edit: However, there may be a third app that blocks these 2 from installing correctly, I installed all available updates first, then used 'Update all' to finally update them.
