How to add gmail as default mailto handler?

I had a webmail handler previously listed as default - I removed it and now there seems to be no mailto link handler at all.

So when I click on some website's 'get in touch' link, nothing seems to happen.

Hi Akshit,

Let's try these steps:
  1. Close any open Gmail tabs.
  2. Type chrome://settings/handlers into your address bar and press enter.
  3. Remove any entries shown here.
  4. Make sure "Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols" is enabled.
  5. Close this tab.
  6. Launch Gmail and you should now see a diamond icon at the right of the address bar. Click that to set Gmail as your default email handler.
If you don't see the diamond icon to the right if the address bar, you may need to quit and relaunch Chrome for the change to take effect.

I have the same problem.  All I get is    "Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols (recommended)"

Can someone tell us how you fixed it?

I had the same problem.  I followed Francis's solution (I, too, had a blank screen under email handlers) and it seems to have solved the problem.

I followed Francis Kovscek's steps above and they worked perfectly!:
1. go to : chrome://settings/handlers
2. get there and remove all email entries
3. then open GMAIL and click on the eye icon
(the eye icon is in the far right side of the address bar for the open gmail tab)

I have same issue. Handler says mail.google.com but gmail does not open on websites. Some other email program does on my Windows 10 laptop that I don't recognize. Could it be Outlook? If so, how do I change it?  I have never used it in the 5 years I have owned my laptop.  Unfortunately, there is not always an email address listed on some websites only a button so no go around.

I can find no "eye" icon in my Gmail address bar for making the gmail connection.

Follow Up: OK. I see I needed to open a completely new instance of gmail after restarting Chrome. I have Chrome set to open my Gmail tab on startup. Even then, no "eye" or "diamond" icon appeared in the Gmail address bar. I had to open a completely new tab and type search "generically" for gmail. At that that point the icon I was seeking appeared. At that. point I could make the Gmail selection as my default email "handler" within Chrome. I'm on Mac OS BTW.

Hint to find 'Handlers' (Håndtering) in the Danish Chrome browser:

I used some time to find out where to find the Chrome Handlers settings in the latest Danish Chrome version via the GUI is located on 'Sikkerhed og Privatliv' -->  'Indstillinger for websites' --> 'Yderligere tilladelser' ---> Håndtering.

This location can also be directly by typing:
chrome://settings/handlers

From Handlers you can remove any incorrect settings and then mailto: work be setup as you want
There are lot of other articles how to do this :-)
