In the last few days, I've noticed a strange favicon appearing on a lot of browser tabs (see image). All of the sites are ones I visit often and some are ones I've created and I know they all have functioning favicons. My sites are Wordpress based and I think many of the others will be too. Is this a WP/Chrome issue and what can I do to restore the proper favicons please?

Thanks for your reply, but that's just my point - the sites I'm talking about DO have favicons. I know that because I manage several of them, have created others myself and the rest are ones I use regularly. One of them that's showing this is one that I manage, and I went today and changed the favicon deliberately to see if it would show on the tab - it doesn't. Is there no solution to this?

Me too, and it's spreading to sites that already have a favicon.

Hi there,

This is the same over here - has anyone found any answers or had any ideas about it yet?

Don't worry.
That is new Chrome default favicon.
Downgrade to older version of Chrome for old favicon.

"default favicon"? Even when the sites already had/have favicons?

Why would Chrome feel the need to essentially replace them in tabs and bookmarks?

I'm seeing the same icon as well.

It's behaving as if the favicon cache is clearing more often, and now specifically showing the favicon on pages that have it called in the page code, vs. showing for all pages on the same domain after loading during a home page load.

As "smart" as Google is, this is a dumb feature and is another example of "making browsing the web better" by encroaching on areas they have no business meddling with.
  1. Not showing the full URL in the status bar when hovering over a link. WHY??? I want to see the URL so that I may know where is goes. Often, the URL is not linger than the width of the browser window so the "we made it shorter to fit" is BS.
  2. The "hiding of the protocol details are unimportant so we'll just hide that for you" is BS.
  3. The favicon "default"? What the hell is going on?

Have the same issue since months. Tried several ways to fix it - none of them worked till now:
  • Delete browser config
  • Delete favicon File in browser config
  • Reset sync of browser data
  • Deleted all bookmarks in bookmark manager and recreated them manually
  • ... and so on..
Now I'm trying to analyze the Favicon sqlite database in Chrome config. Maybe I find some connection between missing icons and the according data in the DB. Somehow awkward because it takes some time for the icons to disappear after restarting Chrome (necessary to access DB contents via sqlite3)...
