Sync pauses and cookies seemingly aren't saved after every time browser closes? 0 Recommended Answers 68 Replies 243 Upvotes

I'm dealing with a problem where each time I close chrome, it pauses sync and doesn't seem to use stored cookies (meaning it logs me out of all websites, regardless of if the password is stored in sync or not).

This issue only began after I moved to a new computer (from windows 7 to windows 10) and used restore from an external hard drive to move over all my files.

I have tried:
- Under site settings "Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended)" is checked
- Also in site settings "Clear cookies and site data when you quit Chrome" is unchecked
- Uninstalling/reinstalling, including deleting all local data, emptying recycling bin and restarting before reinstalling
- Downloading Chrome Beta, which results in the same error
- Deleting all chrome-related program files from my external hard drive restore file before uninstalling/reinstalling

This issue may seem small but has been immensely frustrating. Any help would be appreciated!!

Thank you!

I'm having the exact same problem. I don't even know why it started. I think I took some Windows Updates and boom, every time I close the Chrome window I Sync is paused and I need to log back in. I've tried all the fixes you mentioned with no avail. And It requires me to log into my Gmail app or send me a txt to authenticate every time I log in as well. Most annoying thing ever. Pleeeeeease fix this.

I have two windows 10 2004 machines. They behave the same way. I have to log in again to enable sync.
One of the Windows machines has been running "2004" a few month (early access) and I thought the machine had problems. BUT now when I updated the other windows machine to "2004" I get the same problem.

Interestingly I have tried using Microsoft Edge (chromium) which I do not have to login in every time.
So, something has changed with Microsoft Windows 10 2004. I think it is a Microsoft problem ... something is cleared between reboots ... somebody need to investigate this ... I like Chrome better than Edge!

Pls help,
                    Jonas

Since updating to 2004 my sync is paused most times I load Chrome (but strangely, not all).  Also maybe related, Mail (the one that comes with windows) also has account issues all the time.  This is definitely a change Microsoft has made, sadly it's over 10 days since I "upgraded" so I can't go back to a good version of Windows.

  • Please verify this is only affecting Windows 10 2004? If you don't know, press Win+R and type "winver", and report the version number.
  • If you look in Event Viewer, under Windows Logs > Applications and Services > Microsoft > Windows > Crypto-DPAPI > Operational, do you see any errors?

I have been fighting this problem for since sometime between August and September, and it has persisted throughout my Fall 2020 semester trying to attend classes online and via Zoom. I have had to re-log in to my personal Gmail and my school Gmail account every morning, re-log in to my school's online classroom page. Everything that I had previously logged into with a gmail account needs to be re-connected. I also have to re-log in to Facebook and Flickr, which each also utilize my gmail accounts. Sync is paused between chrome and my main email, AND I also get the error from windows notifications that "an error has occurred" and my Microsoft account on my PC (which also uses my main gmail) has been logged out and I have to log back in to that as well so I can sync my PC and my phone.

Just to clarify, the entire time I've been experiencing this, I have had all cookies set as enabled and had the "clear cookies after browser closes" option switched off. I do also have a smart phone, a tablet, and a laptop that connect to the same google accounts and use chrome. Neither my laptop nor my husband's desktop have experienced these issues, nor my mother's laptop or desktop, or any of my brother's computers, though we all update windows regularly and on time.

---

A few things that I've noticed, being an irresponsible sleeper... Midnight. This happens sometime at or after Midnight for me. I'll be on my PC all day, close the browser and open it back up with no problems. But if the day has rolled over to the next, 1am, 4am.. and I close my browser AFTER that and immediately open it back up, everything is logged out.

I've also looked at my phone with regard to my sign-in history for my accounts. It shows that I have been signed in to my PC since some month well before this began happening, July or sometime, and that It has never been logged out... which is a bit infuriating considering I've been logged out daily! So it doesn't register whatever is happening as a decided log-out.

Last week which was also Finals week, while looking for answers I had found some mention of experimental settings regarding chrome://flags and "same site by default" cookie settings. I opened this experimental settings area and compared with advanced data on cookies, many of which were showing up with "same sight by default" settings. I decided not to screw around with the chrome://flags settings, for fear of breaking something, and instead toggled the switch for "clear cookies after browser closes". This issues stopped for 3 days but started back up again just after Finals ended.

Today, since the problem had begun again, before logging in I followed some other advice. I cleared cached images and files, cleared cookies, unsynced my gmail from google (which was listed as paused at the time for my main while all others were logged out, and restarted my pc about 5 times in between each step. While logging in, I did notice that the drop-down for filling in an email address slot actually listed all of my emails rather than just my school email address and my old, outdated address containing my maiden name; which was something that had been happening since the log-out issue started.
Despite doing all of this, I was logged out again when closing my browser at 4am and immediately opening it back up. I had closed my browser, I believe, at least once prior to midnight and everything was still logged in. However! Now that this has occurred after those things I tried, rather than pause my sync, it has kicked me off of it! Clearly there was some effect in what I did, but it has just made it worse, not better.

Lastly, I also have the Windows 10 ver. 2004. I've had windows 10 since it was first released, so this is not a new install but an update, if that matters. I don't know if any of these details will help for those who are more proficient at these things than I am, but they are correlations I've noticed. I hope, despite the length, this is read carefully and is descriptive enough to avoid any ambiguity.
