Clearing Browser Data Issue 0 Recommended Answers 133 Replies 310 Upvotes

Hi,

After updating Chrome to Chrome 74.0.3729.108 on 24 April 2019, I have encountered a problem when trying to delete my browsing data. I delete all the browsing data every day, sometimes multiple times a day (even going into the "Cookies" section of settings). I use the "Advanced" settings to delete everything, cookies and all.

After updating Chrome, I have noticed that I cannot delete the data - when I click "Clear Data", the circle just keeps spinning round and round.

At first, I thought it was because my laptop - a Windows 10, Version 1809 - was downloading updates. This did seem to temporarily fix the problem, for about three hours, but the problem has returned. I have run a full scan on my anti-virus and have also run Chrome's "Harmful Software" check, and both came back clean.

I have also tried uninstalling Chrome and then reinstalling Chrome, but the problem persists.

Any help would be appreciated

I have the same problem; After updating my chrome on 4/24, 1). I can't even clear my browsing data & cookies (it just circling around and around for hours!) 2) I can't even open some of my favorite bookmarks; 3). and when Chrome first opened, it did not open a preset specific page I had set (it just opened where I have left off, even that option was not even checked!) !! It is really annoying for me. I have also tried to unsync it first too, but it did not work!  Please help.  Thanks

Here's the strange thing... the problem's gone now. I have no idea what it is I did, but the problem is no longer there. I'll keep a watch to see if anything else happens.

UPDATE: As of 5.08pm, the problem returned, somewhat. While hitting the "Clear Data" button now brings the circular loading symbol, it does actually delete everything. Again, no idea on what is causing this to happen.

I don't know if this is any help to anyone else with this problem, or to Google, but the issue seems to be tied to how long I've been on Chrome; when I switch my laptop on for the first half hour or so, there's no problem, but it seems to arise afterwards.

UPDATE: (As of 1.32pm, 27 April 2019) Just attempted IamRoby's advice and reset Chrome's settings; I just had the same problem! The "loading" circle just kept going round and round. It does seem to have reset the settings, but I don't know yet if the issue has been resolved. I'm going to give it an hour.

Oh, do you think h264ify extension might be related to the issue? I've been using that because Chrome isn't compatible with Youtube VP9 codec, and so when I watched YT videos they kept dropping frames. The dropped frames issue has gone away with the extension, but now I am wondering if maybe the extension is causing problems with Chrome 74?

UPDATE: (As of 2.30pm, 27 April 2019): I am hesitant to say it...but the problem does seem to have disappeared. I won't tempt fate by saying it is solved yet, so I'll give it another 24 hours and see what happens.

As of 2:51pm, 28 April, problem still persists. I am going to try disabling the only extension I have, see if that works in the next 24 hours. If not, I am at a loss of what is wrong.

Has anyone contacted Google to find out if they are aware of the problem, and if so, what are they doing about it?  I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to computers. Also, a new update has come up again and I'm afraid to download it. HELP!
