Playing random music in the background

Whenever I'm using chrome, some random music starts playing in the tab and it won't stop. I tried a lot but couldn't find a solution. I don't even have any extensions on my chrome. I don't know how to fix this.

Hi everyone!

I've also seen this issue in the Spanish Chrome forum, and my working hypothesis is that there's an extension which injects these videos into random websites so the video view counts increase. Maybe these extensions are malfunctioning and while their intention is to play the video without the user noticing, now the audio is not muted.

In order to check if this is true, could you go to the Chrome menu ) > More tools > Extensions and turn off all the extensions by clicking the switch next to them? (gray means disabled, blue means enabled).

Then, close Chrome, open it again and continue browsing as normal and see whether this issue still occurs.
  • If the music still plays in the background, then the extensions didn't cause the problem.
  • If the issue is solved now, then one of the extensions was the culprit. You have to check which one of them is the culprit by enabling them one by one.
Bonus points: once you know which extension is doing that, you can enable the "Developer mode" in the extensions page (it's the switch in the top right corner) and tell us the ID of the extension which was causing this. This way, we can alert the Chrome team.

I'm looking forward to your replies!

Cheers :-)

I ran into the same thing.  Ran anti-virus and malware scans which reported 0 virus/malware.  Removed extensions, cleared browser history on all devices, turned off sync, reinstalled chrome and set to default settings - all that and issue still persists.  I too opted to uninstall chrome and use another browser until issue is fixed.

Guys i think extensions are doing it because before it wasnt but now i have added extensions it happens and when it plays you may see the icon at top right of your screen like audio and when you click it it shows what music or video it is playing but when you discard or pause it later it starts playing other vids so try removing extensions and then see if it works or not ??!!!!!!

Hi everyone!

If disabling extensions doesn't solve the issue, then I would suggest doing the following in order to help us troubleshoot the problem and find out what's the cause of the problem:
  • First of all, let's check whether some program is intercepting your page loads and adding the background music. For that, you'll need to do the following:
    1. When the music starts playing in the background, check which tab is playing the music (a speaker icon will be shown in the tab, that's how you can know that).
    2. Focus that tab by clicking it, and click the lock icon in the address bar (located at the top of the window).
    3. Then click Certificate.
    4. Send us a screenshot of the window which appears. It includes information about the certificate which is used to encrypt the contents of the page while it is being transferred from the server hosting the website to your browser, and if someone intercepts the request and changes its contents by including a music file, this certificate will change.
  • Then, we can also try to see whether you have a Chrome policy set. For that, you'll need to go to the page chrome://policy (copy this URL, paste it in the address bar and press enter). Send us a screenshot of that page.
You can learn how to take a screenshot and attach it in the Forums by reading this guide:
Let's see if we can gather some information about these troubleshooting steps and find out what's the culprit.

Thanks for your patience!

I have noticed under the "more settings" tab there is a task manager opening that should allow you to scroll around it took me a sec but afterwards i realized there was a hidden extension called "chrome media router" after disabling that the noises stopped i hope this helps you guys.

Hey so in the task managet.i found that and closed it but the noises keep playing and at the bottom when i play a video on yt it says waiting for "mainmoolicepor" or something like that and then the.random videos start playing in the background

Hi everyone again!

@notagirl: That's weird. The hidden "Chrome Media Router" extension is a legitimate internal Chrome extension which Chrome uses in order to implement the Cast function. If it happens again, can you make sure that ending the "Chrome Media Router" process really stops the music from playing? I wonder whether you actually ended another process.

@Nova: Thanks for the information! If you had some time, it would be awesome if you sent us what's known as a "network log" in order to find out what's the entire URL of the "Waiting for mainmoolicepor..." message and better understand the problem, because it seems like we're not making any progress (some people solve this by disabling extensions and others cannot solve it that way, for instance).

A "network log" is a text file containing information about the pages that you load, and all the resources that are loaded by the websites, apart from debugging information such as the extensions that you have installed, so this would indeed be very helpful. You can export a network log by following these steps:
  1. Close Chrome completely. Then, open it again, and go to the following URL: chrome://net-export/ (copy it, paste it in the address bar and press the Enter key)
  2. In that page, make sure the "Strip private information" option is selected. This way the log will only contain the URLs and some metadata about the resources loaded by Chrome, but it will not contain private information.
  3. To start logging, click the Start Logging to Disk button and select a folder where you would like to save the log file. From this point on, all the websites you load will be logged.
  4. Now, open a new tab and browse the Internet until a random video starts playing in the background.
  5. When that happens you can stop logging by clicking the Stop Logging button.
  6. Upload the log file here: https://drive.avm99963.com/s/MyYI3EgjGUnojW0. This way I'll receive it, and you don't have to send me the log publicly, just in case there was any personal information in the log.
Thanks in advance for your help!
