Google Chrome 81.0.4044.122 remote not starting
0
I'm using Google Chrome 81.0.4044.122 with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and it works fine as long as I do not try to use it remotely. Local display: works. Remote: doesn't start.

I have been using Google Chrome for years now running on a Linux server, connecting from a Windows client via XDMCP using MobaXTerm or vsXsrv. I use Chromium, Opera and Vivaldi, too, next to Firefox.

Some days/weeks ago Google Chrome stopped to work when trying to start it inside an XDMCP session from remote. The other chromium based browser Chromium / Opera / Vivaldi still run without any problems on the local display and remotely.

$ google-chrome
[23601:23618:0422/151304.820587:FATAL:gpu_data_manager_impl_private.cc(439)] GPU process isn't usable. Goodbye.

$ google-chrome --disable-gpu
[23875:23892:0422/151426.082640:FATAL:gpu_data_manager_impl_private.cc(439)] GPU process isn't usable. Goodbye.

$ google-chrome --disable-gpu --disable-extensions
[24100:24117:0422/151509.352673:FATAL:gpu_data_manager_impl_private.cc(439)] GPU process isn't usable. Goodbye.

This is really annoying. What can I do?

Self reply: The only way I've found to start Google Chrome in a XDMCP or VNC or RDP session is to use "--no-sandbox". :(

Same problem here. It apparently doesn't listen to `--no-gpu` anymore. That is a bug in my opinion.

--disable-gpu and else did not work for me.  But --no-sandbox did..

Yeah, same here; browser crashes on launch (with same message as OP) if I'm not using --no-sandbox.
--disable-gpu doesn't help.

My Linux computer is a Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS.
Chromium is version 81.0.4044.122.
I'm not sure when it was last updated, but it worked yesterday.

I'm using PuTTY, Cygwin/X and its XLaunch with +iglx on my Windows computer, and export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 in my shell session.

After restarting the SSH session, then launching Chromium without the export above it works even without --no-sandbox.
It now also starts fine with the export, but give the following errors:

Neither adding --no-sandbox, nor --disable-gpu, nor export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 fixes the problem.  Instead of an outright crash, it puts up a blank window (no decorations or border), spits out the error messages below and hangs.  This isn't a minor problem as the browser doesn't work at all.  To make matters worse, Chromium inherited this Pri 1 bug.  It was still working as of Chromium Version 65.0.3325.181.  I can't tell exactly when the regression occurred in Chrome since I can't download older [working] versions of Chrome.

Shell messages and a GDB session below.

My Ubuntu 18.04 now has  Chrome Version 83.0.4103.97 and Chromium Version 83.0.4103.61, both run without --no-sandbox again. Something seems to have changed.
