awful charcoal theme 0 Recommended Answers 11 Replies 10 Upvotes

Dear Google. I share my accounts with my desktop (PC) and my laptop (mac). Since the recent update a charcoal theme just threw itself at both my machines. No problem, I think, I'll just go into the settings and return it to default. That works on my PC but doesn't work on my mac. When I try to find the return to default on the mac it isn't there. So I try to change the theme and none of them I can see are the recent one. So, as both machines are linked, my PC and the mac both go to default; the problem is, my PC goes to the recently changed look but my mac thinks the default is the new charcoal look. I hate it, I can't see half my open tabs which use black in their icon. Please tell me how I can reverse this look on my mac. Ta.

Hey. you mean the dark theme? for Mac, Chrome get along or combined with Mac theme,
set Mac theme back to white/bright. You can also try to reset the account data, but first unsync Chrome.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to answer but I'm not sure what most of it is that you are saying. I haven't put any theme on my Chrome in mac or pc. On my PC, I can reset to default and have the grey look that has been around forever as the default look. Last week, I updated chrome and got a dark default (looks black, charcoal colour). I can reset the default on my PC to get back the old look. On my mac, the default IS the new black, charcoal look. If I put a theme on my mac, say white (which I can't find in the chrome published themes btw so, say blue) then that theme automatically copies over to my PC which is obviously something I don't want. I am not going to unsync my devices because my mac looks black. What I am asking is, if my PC default can be the old theme, why can't I also get it to be so on my mac? Thanks

Wow. Thanks for your help. It's a Chrome problem, not a mac one.

I think I'm seeing the same issue, with slightly different circumstances. I don't have a Windows computer syncing my Chrome. I've tried deleting preferences, Chrome, etc. and I absolutely can not get rid of this dark-ish theme. It's not macoS dark mode. It's not a syncing issue either

The only solutions I've come up with:

Add a new theme. Then go into Chrome settings and "Reset to default". This is a temporary solution and doesn't persist across a Chrome restart

Install this theme here that matches the original/default theme. This was created by someone who wanted the light Chrome theme when macOS dark mode is enabled (which again, I don't have it enabled and I still have this problem)

I have an outstanding question here: https://superuser.com/questions/1442100/unable-to-reset-google-chrome-theme that describes some of the steps I've taken to try and remove this theme.
